How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would love to buy more cows for milking and sell the milk to my neighbours. I would also like to have a bigger land in which I can continue farming all sorts of cash crops. My passion is in farming and thus I would so much love to do it with a lot of ease.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, everything about GiveDirectly is awesome and I would encourage you to continue with the same spirit even as you go to other villages and help them just like you did to me and my fellow village mates.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a small scale farmer, I get to sell the produce from my farm and earn a few coins to earn a living which I use to support my family of five kids. With my second transfer which I received from GiveDirectly I used Ksh 30,000 to build myself a house, since the one I had was not in good condition. I am happy that my family and I have a place to call home now. I have always wanted to do livestock farming, so I bought a cow worth Ksh 20,000. With the remaining Ksh 3,000 I bought food for my family and we get to have a meal every day on our table.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I can vividly recall that it was in the evening when I was winding up the farm work. Suddenly I heard my phone ringing and vibrating loudly, Upon checking I realised that I heard I received money from GiveDirectly. This was the best news that I had received in a long time, It was so refreshing that I forgot that I was tired after a long day in the sun. I was overwhelmed with joy because I knew God had answered our prayers. We embarked on planning how we would utilise the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life today is that I was able to stock enough foodstuffs in the house to last for a while. I am grateful and relieved that my children can no longer go to bed on an empty stomach like before. Secondly, our living standards have improved to a better one, I no longer worry any time it's about to rain since I have a decent shelter over my head. The impact that GiveDirectly has placed on my life is so huge that I could not have achieved it in a short period.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a consistent farmer and my husband is a truck driver in the tea estates, together we are blessed with five children. Farming has been my source of livelihood. Building a decent house for my family has been my desire, though I was unable to realise the goal due to financial constraints. Therefore upon the receipt of my initial transfer, I opted to build a decent house where I used KES20,000 in building a kitchen house and then KES 15,000 in buying building materials for the main house. I am hopeful that I would be able to complete the house once I receive my second transfer. The house that I had before was old, grass-thatched and to make matters worse it was leaking during the rainy season. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on clothes and foodstuffs. I am forever thankful for the transfer that lifted my living standard amazingly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Long droughts per year in our area are a big challenge. In addition to poor yields due to low rainfall, getting clean water for domestic use is the norm of life. I depend on small water pans which are not safe. Animals drinks directly from there and the wash of dirty environment into it buy rainwater makes it inconclusive for us. Water-borne diseases are almost becoming part of us. This cash transfer means good health for my family. I am planning to use KES 25000 to buy and install a 3000-liter water tank. I will be harvesting clean water from my roof thus reducing the difficulty of going for miles in search of clean water. I am certain I will be in a position to reduce water-borne diseases in my family which is my happiness.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The well-being of my family is a top priority. I have a young family with the eldest daughter being fifteen years old. They need good access to their basic needs for proper development. In the last six months, I harvested two sacks of maize from 0.3-acre pieces of land. This has been my biggest joy since we have had enough food in our family. This also allowed me to convert my other income to my children's education.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is my major challenge currently. I depend on subsistence farming to make ends meet. Due to low rainfall and crop disease, farming has to be doing well to rely on. The little I get goes for consumption and other daily needs. I hardly invest in other income-generating activities since I do not have surpluses.
