How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would love to start a saloon since I have trained in hair dressing course and its my passion too.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I love the great impact that GiveDirectly has had on me, my family and the whole village. I would recommend you to continue with the same spirit in the other villages. Giving unconditional transfers to the less fortunate.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the second transfer that I received, I was able to add to my flock by buying 1 cow which was worth Ksh 30,000. I have rented a shamba where I farm potatoes for home use and I sell the rest. Since I have usually admired having my own business, I was able to spare Ksh 20,000 which I used to start a business of selling second hand clothes in the nearby market. With this I am now able to cater for my family's basic needs with much ease. My husband has a small business of selling eggs, but this doesn't bring enough money to support us. I am now happy that I can be able to support him in providing for our family. We are blessed with two kids and I would love to be able to see them through their education without difficulties.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My neighbors received their transfers earlier at around 4 pm and I seemed to be the only one left out. But at a quarter to six o'clock while I was just sitting in my house taking tea is when I received a message alert on my phone. On checking, I had received the eagerly awaited 55 000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy and immediately contacted my husband about the good news because he was not around at the time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received the transfers is the availability of money to buy enough food. Earlier on, we used to boil vegetables and drink black tea due to a lack of money to buy cooking oil and milk. Nowadays, with GiveDirectly transfers we can afford to cook chapatis for breakfast. Additionally, through the transfers, I ventured into second-hand clothes. This has enabled me to be financially independent. This is because on a good day I can get up to KES 2,500. Before, I had desired to start a clothes business just after getting married due to lack and hardship but couldn't afford it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband works as an egg vendor for almost ten years now. His income is normally spent on food and household items. During enrollment, my priority after getting transfers was to buy a piece of land. But this changed when we received transfers because our potential land sellers saw no need of selling land. After all, they received their transfers too. Therefore, I opted to buy a heifer at KES 28,000 because when it reproduces it will a source of milk and income for my family. Secondly, I used KES 7,000 as capital for starting a second-hand clothes business. This is because it's a daily income source for my family. Thirdly, I spent KES 8,000 on the latest clothing fashion for the whole family. This is because earlier on we relied on traditional Vitenges and second-hand clothes. Lastly, I spent KES 3,100 on a bag of maize and KES 1,000 on 25 kilos of rice. This will sustain us for longer hence reducing household expenditure.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money I will budget KES 60000 to buy 0.2 pieces of land and KES 20000 to build an iron sheet house for my family. With my business of selling boiled eggs, I earn a profit of KES 500 daily. This money is not enough to support the basic needs of my family of four. These financial constrain has been my main obstacle towards having better housing for my family. This piece of land we living on is not ours and it is small which denies us an opportunity of engaging in farming to support our family. I am also struggling to buy milk for my two young sons now that milk is stable food for children. To save on this I will buy a cow with the remaining money to enable me to produce milk for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I received the good news that Givedirectly is coming to my village, I was moved with joy and happiness. I saw the hands of God and my dreams coming true now that we are crippling financially.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Maize production in our area is poor due to unfavorable weather conditions and the emergence of maize rust disease in our area. This opened us to perennial food shortages. This is worsened with my low income which is not sustainable.
