How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in that I no longer have to deal with high school fees stress because I used the transfer to settle all the fees balance that I owed the school. My children will no longer miss classes and I believe this is going to improve their academic performance. I have also invested the money in cane farming and in the next one year when my cane matures, I shall be able to reap more benefits because cane farming is such a big cash crop in our area. Initially, I could not think of owning any sugarcane farm because all my earnings would always get depleted on either food or school fees. It is my great hope that the sugarcane proceeds shall be sufficient enough to pay college costs to my children and once they complete their studies they will be guaranteed of well paying jobs that shall change our fortune.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GD did well in mobilization of the village so that everyone was made aware of its program. Changing officers in different stages enhanced transparency in its operations. The mode of sending money was also very convenient. There was harmony in giving households money in that at registration both couples were made to consent. Additionally I have to commend GD for not involving the government officials in its selection criteria. On the other hand, I would have suggested they split the transfer amount into four installments because I had a feeling that in case of fraud, one may end up losing a large chunk of the transfer.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spend the second transfer in payment of school fees to my children who had fees balance and had been sent home and were at the risk of missing end term exams. The remaining balance I used in starting a poultry keeping business. It is my hope that once my birds mature, I shall be able to increase my income from the sale of their eggs. I would have created a job to my wife who shall be collecting and selling the eggs to our neighbors in the local market unlike now that she purely depends on my casual earnings.

I leased a piece of land to be able to farm as we approach the farming period. Besides that, I was able to settle my children's school fees arrear that was pending. The remaing amount I spend on food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means so much me because I will be able to buy farm inputs like fertilizer to improve my crop farming and also clear school fee for my daughter who is in form three.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is very early in the morning when I wake up to pray before I start my duties. I always feel happy at that time because I know it's by God's grace that I got to see the new day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is when I had an accident with my motorbike and had to stay in the house for almost three months while receiving treatment. This caused my family to suffer a lot both psychologically and financially because I am the bread winner, but I thank God I got healed.
