How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal has been to have a stable means of income. I can longer rely on farming to sustain myself and my family due to unfavourable weather conditions. My main goal was to start a second hand clothes shop in my area but due to financial constraints I was unable to. I had to settle school fees arrears for my five school going children first before embarking on any new goals.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has completely changed my life and for that I am grateful. I had no means to settle the huge school fees balance that was owed to the school and Give Directly came in at the right time to assist. I'm very happy that they are all back to school now. Thank you Give Directly and may God bless you.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have always lived in a small house that was not enough for my growing family. I am happy to say that I expanded my house and we can now all live comfortably together. Then, out of my five children, three had been sent home for accruing school fees arrears and so I cleared the balances and are now back in school. I also bought three goats which I will rear and sell off at a profitable sum once they are fully grown. With the remaining amount I bought food for my family. Thank you so much Give Directly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home doing my normal daily chores and I heard a message ring. Since I'm illiterate, I called my son who is my helper to check and he told me that I had received the transfers. We were so happy all together because I knew I'll be able to settle all the pending bills.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I haven't seen a great change since I'm yet to achieve my set goals by I'm sure by the time I will have spent my second transfer there will be a noticable difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Ever since my husband fell off from a coconut tree and broke his hands, it has not been easy for me tailoring to pay school fees for our four children who are in school, providing for the family and taking cate of my sick husband. Nowadays, casual jobs have become scarce and this made me accumulate huge fees arrears. I have also been not able to repair our roof and I have been leaving in fear that our weak roof might be carried away by strong winds. My top priority when I received the transfers were therefore was to pay school fees and replace our house roof. I spent KES 20900 of my recent transfer to pay school fees, KES 10000 to buy iron sheets, KES 5500 to buy a goat. I'm looking forward to add the remaining balance to my next transfer so that I can have enough to pay mason and buy roofing poles.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this means owning land of my own. I have been living as a squatter for the past two years. I desire to own a place of my own where we will live happily with my family. When I received this money, I will use(KES 50,000) it to acquire a plot of my own.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Peace and harmony in our family are what always paint a smile on my face. Despite the challenges life has served us with, I am glad that I find satisfaction being around my peaceful family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Owning a place of your own you call home is every human being's desire. I am leaving in great fear knowing that any given moment I can be evicted from the only place I call home. The thought of this(being evicted) gives me sleepless nights.
