How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Initially, I had planned to work on the floor of my house by plastering it, but when I realized that I would be left with some money, I decided to divert it to building a kitchen house, I am glad that all this was possible because of the aid that I had received from GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has improved our living standards, the entire village has transformed into a new one, I can proudly say that I own a decent house because of the transfer that I received from GiveDirectly. In this organization, things are done professionally and I don't see anything that is not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had constructed a house before but I was unable to do the finishing due to the financial constraints, when GiveDirectly visited our village I saw it as a perfect opportunity to plaster the floor of my house, therefore, I used KES 25,000, I then decided to use the remaining KES 30,000 in constructing a kitchen house so that we would have a place to cook from unlike before where we would cook outdoors. I am glad that I now own a decent house which is a great milestone in our lives and I am grateful for the support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am. I was in school, I am a teacher. I didn't heard any message. When I was checking my phone. I could not believe my eyes. There was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and immediately called my spouse to inform her of the good news. She felt so happy too. We knew we would be able to buy a dairy cow. We used to buy milk daily and it was so costly for me. Buying dairy cow was the first priority.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and it was so costly for me. I am a teacher and I also do small causal jobs in the village. The amount of money that I get is so small. I was not able to buy a daily cow. My children would go without milk whenever I had no money. This was so demoralizing and very stressful. Currently I have a dairy cow. I no longer buy milk which was so expensive. My children get enough milk daily unlike before. I sell the extra milk to earn an income to meet other household items. I have also deleted much of my time on this amazing dairy project. I have saved the money which I could have used to buy milk on other expenses. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled to own a dairy cow. I have devoted much of time on dairy farming and learning new ways of feeding them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 40,000 of the first transfer to purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and it was so costly for me. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but it was not possible because I didn't had the money. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that we shall afford to purchase a dairy cow that will provide us with milk mainly for consumption. Since milk is one of our staple and volatile food items, we have been spending almost 0.3 USD daily on buying them. This is relatively costly to us because I am currently earning a small amount since I am not yet employed permanently. Also, we shall build a kitchen because currently we have a three-roomed house where one of the rooms serves as the kitchen. Since we use firewood as fuel, our house is usually filled with smoke and soot.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a teacher, the happiest part of my day is in the evening when I have attended all the lessons and successfully handle them. This makes me feel like a competent, accountable and responsible teacher.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship we have faced as a family is the unfavorable climatic conditions and tropical diseases that adversely affect our crops. We are interested in farming to supplement our income. So, currently we are struggling to sustain ourselves because my wages (as a teacher) cannot adequately suffice our needs.
