How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Receiving the transfers have made my life easier because, through them, I have been able to provide for my family, pay school fees for my children and pay my rent on time even when I do not have a source of income. Being a single mother, I have a lot of responsibilities which I had a huge challenge taking care of until I started receiving the transfers. I am now less worried because I know that despite my income not being able to provide enough for my needs, the transfers have me covered.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I was born and raised in this slum where I now also have a family. Living in this condition is not the best experience because of the poor living conditions which is why my wish is to offer my children a better life by having them grow up in a better and secure environment. I have been saving with the aim of purchasing a piece of land which can later be inherited by children. To achieve this goal, I have decided to save most of my transfers which I will then add to the savings I already have to raise the required amount.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I recently joined a savings group where I can be able to save part of my transfers in order to achieve my future goals of buying a piece of land. I saved most of the money I recently received in the group, paid my monthly medical insurance contributions and spent the rest on foodstuff.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have always had a foodstuff business which has been my main source of income. Since my family needs depend on the business, it has not been doing well. This is because we take a lot from the business but we give very little. The business had started scaling down because we had used most of the resources for family needs. When I started receiving my transfers from GD, I used part of my monthly income to boost the business by buying more stock to the little I had earlier. Right now, the business is doing well and the fear I had of the business collapsing is no more because of GD transfers.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal, for now, is to buy a piece of land where I will build my house. My husband did not inherit much land from his parents and so we don't have a good place to build our house. At my age, I need to have my own home and is the reason why I have started saving from part of my transfers and my income to help in buying the land.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on paying for my monthly National Hospital Insurance Fund subscription. I acquired the card with part of my transfer and I am glad I get quality treatment whenever I visit the hospital because of the card. The other part of the transfer I used to clear this year's fees arrears for my daughter who is in primary school. I feel relieved next year she will be starting a fresh and not carrying forward this year's arrears. The remaining part of the transfer I used to buy food for my family.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Previously I relied on washing people's clothes as the main source of income but it wasn't reliable and at the same time, I was not paid well. I could not meet most of my needs because of the low pay. This made life so tough and in most cases, I lived on debts. I'm happy I'm not in this situation anymore because through transfers fro GiveDirectly I was able to start up an ice cream business which has really saved me a lot. Even though the ice cream business is not doing well now because of the cold weather, I know I will be able to earn a lot of profits after some few months from now after this winter season.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
The ice cream business isn't doing so well especially due to the cold weather and this has led to a reduction in sales. I ended up getting very little profit which isn't able to take care of my family needs. I, therefore, have a new goal of saving some money so that I can start clothes business. I plan to sell sweaters and leather jackets in particular since that is what most people may need considering the cold weather at the moment
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a businesswoman, I normally sell ice cream in order to earn a living. The business has been doing well but since it is the only source of income I ended up using all the profits and had nothing to use to restock the business. So when I received the transfer, I used part of the recent transfer to restock the business. In addition to that, my child who is in grade 2 required some textbooks. The money came in handy and I used part of it to purchase the books. I used the rest of the amount to buy food for the family. I thank Give Directly for giving me the help because they assisted me to settle some of my emergencies.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goal is to buy a piece of land in my rural home and build my house. Currently I do not have a house in my rural home and I am still living with my mother. I am planning to save part of the income from my business and use it to buy the land and build a house so that my family can always have a place to sleep whenever we go home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments from Give Directly is that I no longer struggle to provide for my family. In the past I used to struggle to provide basic needs for my family and pay school fees for my children with the little money I got from casual jobs such as washing clothes. I used my transfer to start a new business where I sell ice cream and the income I get is enough to buy food and pay school fees for my children. I am now happy since I no longer wash clothes to earn an income and I can spend all my time in my business .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my most recent transfer to pay school fees for my child. This is because I received the money at a time when I had not cleared all her school fees. I also used part of transfer to boost my business where I sell ice cream. This will thus boost my income from the business. In the past two months preceding the current transfer, I used part of my transfers to start this business. I used to get little income from the business since the initial capital was small and I was struggling to provide for my family and pay school fees for my children. I also used the remaining amount to buy food which will last us for some time and I will therefore be able to save the money which I would have used to buy food.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
It was seven o'clock in the morning when I woke up, checking my phone I was excited to see the message that I have received my first transfer from Give Directly. I was very happy because I knew that from that day I will no longer struggle to provide for my family as I will be getting a helping hand from Give Directly. Thank you Give Directly for the cash transfers.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I prioritize like that because first I would love to start a business that I can depend on and sustain myself on a daily basis. Secondly, I will pay school fees for my children because I have been struggling so much and lastly, I will use some to pay rent since sometimes I always don't get enough for to pay and I get so much balance.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is how I will raise my kids as a single mother and be able to provide everything for them and also take then to school and get education. Secondly, as a single mother am always worried about how one day I can be able to buy land so that me and my children can have a place of our own. Lastly, unemployment worries me as a single mother I have children to provide to and ensure they get all they need from a parent and since I don't have a job it becomes a big challenge sometimes.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition in life since I was a child is to be a chef. And I believe that one day I will go to school and do catering and own a hotel.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
Once I woke up in the morning I prepare my kids and take them to school. Then later I will go to look for laundry work as usual and once am done I come back and rest. Later I can go visit my friends for small chats as I do shopping for supper. Later, I will cook then eat and sleep.
