How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my life is different from how it was in that, I was able to help my mother build a house. I have now found peace knowing that my mum is now living in a decent house and she is not exposed to any type of danger. It has also greatly reduced my budget because she went upcountry therefore I no longer pay rent for her. I now save that money which will help me launch my future projects.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to buy land and build rental houses. I am tired of looking for formal employment opportunities which are usually hard to get. They are also inconveniencing since you work under maximum supervision. I believe with the rental houses, I will forget about looking for casual jobs forever.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer to finish constructing my mother's house which I had started working on with my second transfer. I am glad that my mother's house is now complete. The previous one was almost collapsing and I feared for her life. Before then, constructing a new house for her was impossible because I did not have a stable job. I used to wash people's clothes to get an income which couldn't build a house. I was forced to rent her a house in Nairobi paying 1000KES every month. She has now gone back to the countryside after the new house was ready and I am happy that she is staying where she loves most.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I was born in Nairobi and we rarely visit our rural home because we do not have a house there. My mother is getting quite old and I would like her to relocate permanently to the village so that she can focus on farming which has always been her greatest desire. But for this to be possible, she must have a house of her own to avoid any inconveniences, that is why I will combine part of the money I recently received to the next two transfers so that I can construct her a decent house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I used part of the money received from GD to buy a few personal items such as clothes and shoes which has really changed how I carry out myself in the society because I now dress much better compared to a few months ago. I am also very excited because I am about to build my mother a house, something she has never owned her entire life and I am sure will make her happy as well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Christmas is around the corner and everybody wants to glam up, I did not want to be left out so I spent a smaller portion of the money on clothes and shoes. I also supported my mother by paying part of this month's rent and buying foodstuff and household items that would last us a few days. I did this because I wanted to relieve my mother off her daily pressures of providing food, but at the same time being careful not squander the money.I saved the rest of the money on my M-shwari account for future plans.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
It was hard believing that I had received such an amount of money because it is something that has never happened to me before. When I saw the text messages, I had to check my M-pesa balance to be really sure that it was real.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I prioritize like that because currently am doing hairdressing at my place and I have the knowledge and skills I need and now I would like to have my own shop from my house. I believe I will have more income since now I have a fixed place to operate from. Secondly I would pay school fees for my child so that he would have peace and concentrate in school and pass and lastly I will take myself to school at least to further my studies and enhance my skills.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is unemployment because poverty is bad and it means I won't be able to provide for my children. Secondly, my worry is not being able to pay house rent as it means at some point I can be chased out by the landlord am me and my child might lack a place to sleep. Lastly, getting daily subsistence for my son also worries me because if I can get it means I might lack even food for the day and sleep hungry.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition in life is to be a well known business lady and have a big beauty shop that I can even sell things at wholesale to others.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
Once am awake I prepare my son for school then do household chores. After that I shower and take breakfast and wait for clients to come for hairdressing at my place until maybe 8pm or 9pm then I go make supper eat and rest for few hours and then go to sleep.
