How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals now. My main focus is to expand my small business of selling shoes. I wish to meet the demand of my customers. This business gives me some income to meet all my basic household needs of my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Most of the people in my community were able to build better houses and start daily keeping projects. All these projects were not easy to begin since it needs a lot of money. Currently, everyone is so grateful and living a better life. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I own a small business of selling shoes at the shopping center near where I live, I spent $170 on adding more stock. I am so happy because the income that I get now is much higher compared to earlier days. This business gives me some income which I use on meeting my daily basic needs. During that time I gave birth through Cesarean delivery (C-section), This was not an easy process for me. I was admitted and the baby was put in a nursery for close monitoring. I am a single mother and I had to clear the hospital bills alone. I spent $200 on medication and other charges that were needed. I am so grateful because were it not GiveDirectly I do not know where I could have gotten the money to pay the bills. I was discharged and currently, I am doing well with my baby yet to go back to my business of selling shoes. I spent $50 on paying school fees for my two sons who are at primary school. Currently, they are studying well without being disturbed. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and other basic household needs that we were missing at home. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was on a motorcycle returning home from a business errand that bright morning. And at exactly 7.53 am that's when my phone started vibrating in my hand. Because I was using my phone for business I thought it was a business deal, I, therefore, requested the motorcycle rider to stop for a while. On checking, lo and behold, I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and kept to myself because the motorcycle rider was a stranger.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is peace and happiness. This is because through the transfers I have not only fenced my piece of land but also plowed and planted it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mom and a mother of three. I have been working as a casual laborer on a flower farm for the past seven years. From the monthly income of KES 7,000 most of it, I invest in merry-go-round contributions and a small percentage in household consumption. During enrollment, my key plan was to buy my piece of land. But this changed when the transfers arrived because my mother decided to give me an acre of land as instructed by my late father. I, therefore, used KES 15,000 on securing my farm with a chain-link fence. Secondly, I spent KES 15,000 on building a tiny Iron roofed house. This is for my kids to get a place to call home. Additionally, I spent KES 10,000 on plowing and planting maize and beans. This is to ensure the availability of adequate food for my family come the next harvest season. Thirdly, I spent KES 6,000 on the latest clothing fashion for my kids. As a result, my kids are decently dressed. I also spent KES 1, 000 on two jembes and a durable cooking pot which will make my farming work easier and cooking easier respectively. Lastly, I spent KES 2,600 on a bag of maize and KES 2,000 on household shopping. This has helped cut off household expenditure.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will finally be able to own a piece of land, a dream I have been working hard for. I was married but was separated from my husband twelve years ago with three children. I have been raising them on my own and as they grow up, I would wish to have a place we can call home away from my parents where we are currently staying. I plan to use KES 90,000 to purchase three points of an acre. For the rest of the amount, I plan to pay my children's school fees and buy them clothes.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My greatest happiness is my children. Two months ago they did very well in school and made me very happy. They gave me hope, they were given responsibilities in church and school and made me proud, I can see a future and great leaders in them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is my health. I have high blood pressure which really affected me to the point I had to stop working with a flower farm I was working as a casual worker. Due to the kind of work I was doing at a flower farm, the high chemicals, and the toxic environment, caused me to have rashes on my body and high blood pressure. Being a single parent and raising three children singlehandedly is challenging financially and sometimes I use traditional medicine when I cannot afford to visit a doctor.
