How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently I have a new goal of making sure that school fees for my four children in secondary and college level is paid in time. I have always desired to give them the best in terms of education so that they could have better living standards than the one that we are having as a parents and with the farming that I do, I am optimistic that I will be able to get more money and be able to pay their school fees and always keep them in school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did well in enrolling everyone without bias and gave each person freedom to choose what to do with the money. This empowered people to make very wise decisions without feeling threathened of the outcomes of their decisions and fair enough everyone who benefitted from the program is happy. We did not find anything that we thought should be corrected as GiveDirectly officers did everything perfectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 35000 to pay school fees for our children who are in various schools. Thisdecision was so because very often we struggle to raise their school fees. The sources of income are minimal and yet we have 10 children to take care of; 4 of them are in secondary and collge level and they require a lot of money to be able to stay in school uninterrupted. GiveDirectly came in handy to help us pay ahead and keep them in school for longer before the next payment is made. We are so gratful and happy that GiveDirectly held our hand. At least we now have peace of mind knowing better that our children would not be sent home for school fees anytime soon. The remaining amount of money was used to advance my farming practices as well as buy food, clothes and other basic neccessities for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home going about my daily household chores. I heard my phone ring and got it out to check the contents of it like I would always do. I thought it could be a message from a service provider or from a friend. However, to my surprise the message read '' you have received a sum of KES 55 000 from segovia tevhnogu. My happiness was beyond measure. I knew that four of my children who are in school were going to be able to the next level.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is the payment of school fees for our children. It is always a priority to me and eveu

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a good education for my 5 children. I have three children in universities and two in secondary school. My husband being the only breadwinner in the family, we struggle a lot to make ends meet and we have asked for fundraising from well-wishers twice. In a year, I pay KES 200,000 for university fees and KES 70,000 for secondary school. This amount is a lot and we have not paid even half of it this year. They are always sent home for school fees and this makes me sad. The thought of being Givedirectly's beneficiary makes me happy. I want to use all the transfers to pay for school fees in arrears.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Prolonged drought periods in this area had made farming of less importance especially in the year 2020 but for the last 6 months, it has been raining consistently which made me plant vegetables and tomatoes for sale. I got 8 bags of kales that I sold at KES 15,000 and two crates of tomatoes which fetched me KES 12,000 in the first harvest. I used this money to pay for school fees for my children in high school. Presently, I have half an acre of land under cabbages which I will harvest next month, and projects to get a profit after selling them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
At the moment, lack of finances is my biggest worry. My husband is a primary school teacher and he earns very little because he is repaying a very huge loan indebted to him 3 years ago when we had our third born son in medical college. We can hardly afford to pay school fees for all our five children in school and we are forced to call for fundraising events to aid in the payment of the school fees and expenses.
