How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes. I have an additional goal which is to ensure that my child joins the secondary school. One of my daughters will be sitting for her final primary national examination next week. Thereafter, she will graduate from primary to secondary school. As a parent, it is my duty to ensure that my children get a better education so that they can have a bright future. I have, therefore, started saving money from the casual work that I do to ensure enable join the secondary school on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly did well by giving people money without asking for refunds. Through the support, people's lives have improved including the village as a whole. Everyone is currently happy in the village and there are no more conflicts in our area.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I only had a single room house which we used to share with my grown up children. We felt deprived of our privacy but since the small income I earned from the casual work could not afford a bigger house, we had to squeeze in it. The moment when I received the second transfer, I spent KES 28000 on both building materials (iron sheets, nails, timber) and building labor for constructing a new, bigger house. The previous hose is currently occupied by my children for their studies and sleeping too. I am great full to Give Directly because we now have our privacy. KES 25000 I paid for both my child's secondary and primary school fees so that they could clear their fee balance for the whole of this year.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the farm with my wife and we were busy weeding the maize crops as we chatted about life and how the transfer that GiveDirectly had promised us was going to change our lives once we get them. As we were going about with the job, I heard my phone ringing notifying me of a new message. I stopped to check what it was all about and I could not believe my eyes when I saw that we had received the money that we had been eagerly waiting for. I was so happy on seeing this and I told my wife the good news as I showed her the SMS. She was so happy too and we celebrated together for a while giving thanks to God for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference in our lives. Our lives were uplifted and we are no longer the same. We were able to achieve some of the plans that we have been having for a long time but due to a lack of money, we were not able to achieve them. We now have a cow of our own and we no longer have a kitchen that is grass-thatched since we were able to construct another one that is roofed with iron sheets. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for everything.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer money on buying a cow. I bought the cow at KES 26000 which is inclusive of the transport cost. We decided to buy the cow because that is what we had always wanted to have. We had a cow before but unfortunately, it got sick and died. Our neighbor helped us with one and that is the one we have been rearing and depending on to give us milk for our consumption. The other reason why we wanted to have a cow of our own is that we know that our neighbor might need his cow back and hence it is better to have one so that when that happens, we will not lack a source of milk. Although we had always wanted to buy a cow, we were not in a position to because we didn't have the money. We do not have a stable source of income and my wife and I depend on casual jobs to earn a living. The money that we get from the casual jobs most of it usually goes to the purchase of food especially maize for our family of eight. We are hence so much grateful to GiveDirectly because, with the transfer, we were able to achieve our dream.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been working as a motorcycle rider since I got married. My children are now grown up and some of them are already in school. I only earn an average of KES.250 take home after paying the owner of the motorbike. This goes into purchasing food and other basic needs for my children. I am super excited today that my ambitions of doing poultry farming will be realized through GiveDirectly transfers. I plan to spend KES. 40,000 to build a chicken coop, use KES. 30, 000 to buy 200 one-day-old chicks, start-up vaccines, and feeds. I also plan to use the remaining amount to buy stock of food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When my son scored 390 marks in his primary level exams, I was elated even though I was worried about how I would pay for his secondary school fees. My fears eventually came to pass as he was lucky to get a scholarship from the Equity Bank Foundation. I was overjoyed because this was a big relief for me and my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
One of the challenges I am currently facing is food security. I earn KES 250 daily from my motorcycle taxi business. This amount is not enough to meet the basic needs of my family of 8. On several occasions, I have been frustrated because my family has had to skip the evening meals since I was not able to provide for them.
