What does receiving this money mean to you?
Since 2015 I have been making plans to open, but didn't have the initial capital to buy Cocoa beans and start. After 5 successive years of making rice farm and harvesting it and selling some, I was able to save at least LRD 3,000.00 every month and did so for straight 4 years. The money realized was used to start my cocoa farm in 2019 on a smaller scale covering about 25 acres. I am excited to hear about the GiveDirectly cash transfer program and if I am successful to benefit from the program, I will use the money to expand my cocoa farm up to 400 to 500 acres, use a portion of the money to plaster my house and be regular with the payment of my children's school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Over the past 6 years, I struggled to raise money to start my cocoa farm. I saved LRD 3,000.00 every month for straight 4 years dating from 2015 and I finally started my cocoa farm in 2019 covering about 25 acres of land area. While planning to expand the farm, but didn't have money to buy cocoa beans, I received a gift of cocoa beans from an NGO called 'Sokodafee' which cost more than LRD 100,000.00 in monetary value. The unexpected gift of cocoa beans from Sokodafee brought me so much joy and happiness and will now help me to expand my cocoa farm on a larger scale.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The greatest challenge I am facing currently is with the payment of my children's school fees. I have 5 children that I am sponsoring in school and all of them are still in high school. Paying their tuition on time has been so difficult for me. I plant rice every year and when the rice is harvested, I sell some to raise money to pay the children's school fees. I have done this for the past ten unbroken years.
