What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the money from GiveDirectly the first thing I though of was clearing the tuition debt my kids had in their school because three days before receiving the funds they had been kicked out of class. I went on to give the both of KES 800 to be split between them so as to settle the debt and so that they could go back to attending class. My second concern was about nutrition since I barely had any food in the house, I therefore went ahead and bought nine packets of maize flour which cost me KES 1,000. I remained with a balance of KES 1,200 where I used the KES 200 to purchase laundry detergent and then as for what was left behind I used it to buy my third goat since I started getting the transfers.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in giving us proper education about their programs. This helps in dispelling fears from the community about certain myths associated with foreign aid. Once I am educated about the programs I am in a position to finally decide whether or not I should be enrolled in the program.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother and my children depend heavily on me for everything. I currently do not have a well-paying job and I have been struggling in terms of putting food on the table for my family. The little I earn from the manual jobs are not sufficient to pay school fees for all my school-going children. When I received the transfer my priority was to pay school fees. So I spent KSH 1000 in paying school fees for my children. I gave each KSH 500. It is a relief for me that they are still in school learning. I also spent a portion of the transfer to buy food for the family. In these difficult times, everything shoots up. The food prices are abnormally high making it very hard for me to afford the food. In addition to paying school fees and buying food, I also started saving so that I can buy a goat. I currently have saved KSH 1000 that I am planning to buy a goat and start rearing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had the news about the cash from my son. He informed me that money had been sent to my phone. I confirmed that and I was very happy. The cash was going to help me in many ways. My joy at that time was unexplainable. I sat down and thought clearly about how I would spend the money. After a moment of thinking I came up with a plan on how to spend the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
There is a difference in my life in that I was able to clear some of my bills and also plan on the way forward on how to uplift myself with the cash in my life. I am now very cautious about how I spend money and I am, very keen on engaging in activities that will build and change my life for the better. Thank you so much for the funds.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the money on buying food and spent some on school fees and the rest of the amount I saved. At the time I received the money I did not have any food left in my house. When the amount was sent I was thankful as I knew that I will add some stoke of food in my house for me and my family. I spent a total of KSH on buying food. I also spent KSH paying school fees for my kids. Each got KSH each. I saved KSH 1000 just in case I got an emergency I would use the money.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Fire is a good servant but a bad monster. Upon marriage, my husband had a nice, mud-walled, and grass-thatched house. It was spacious for my family. One day, it was brought down by fire. Since then, we have never had the opportunity to build another one. We live in a small house that used to serve as a kitchen. GiveDirectly transfers will help me make a come-back. I will accumulate the funds to help me purchase iron sheets for roofing. For poles, in the accompany of my husband and sons, we will go to the forest to cut, that are enough for the house size.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I sell charcoal to make a living for my family. Whenever a customer buys the whole stock, I feel very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food security has been a major challenge to me. My husband is not employed. He left work some years ago due to fatigue and old age. Since then, the burden of provision has shifted to me. Agriculture is not doing well due to inadequate rainfall, a condition that has made us have limited harvest in the stores.
