How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I do not have any goal that I am planning to pursue once I get some money. Usually, I plan if I have the money at hand, by doing so I avoid some unnecessary stress that one may have for setting a goal and then fail to accomplish it because of lack of money. if I get the money I will compose myself well and come up with a tangible goal depending on the situation I will be passing through.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is a hand-holding organization that assists people to be able to pursue things they thought were impossible. On my side, it helped me to pay school fees for my children at once. Initially, I used to fetch some firewood and take them to the school for them to be converted into monetary value and the money to be taken directly as school fees. It was like a batter trade, I give them firewood and assess the value then the money is taken as school fees for my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the second transfer, the plan was to buy a cow which I did. I bought the cow for KES 20000.00. The aim of buying the cow was for milk purposes both for sale and family use. I also paid KES 15000.00 school fees for my two secondary school children. Initially, my children were ever sent back home for fees but since I got the transfer they have been retained in school and they are doing well. Thereafter, I used the remaining amount in sustaining my family since it was a drought season. It is with deep regret that the cow died a month later of starvation. The drought that hit our area did not spare my cow.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember I had attended a burial for one member of my clan in the neighboring village then my phone started vibrating. I decided to ignore it since I wasn't expecting to hear from anyone at that particular moment. Therefore after I was done with the burial ceremony, I decided to go back home. I later checked the content of the message notification that I had received earlier on. Only to confirm it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly, my mood changed, and felt so happy and gave all the thanks to the almighty God for sending GiveDirectky into my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I managed to expand the hotel business that I was initially running for quite some time. Previously the business was not doing that good since I had no enough capital and this prompted me to have less variety of meals and is made me lose a lot of customers. Concerning that, all I could count at the end of the day was just loss. Since this was my main source of income, it really affected my family's wellbeing. At times, proving their basic needs were not achievable at all and it reached a point I wanted to shut down the business. However, after expanding it, I am now having s many customers because there are a variety of meals hence good returns. I am good and proud becasue meeting my family's needs has been easy, unlike before. My children are now studying without any distance because I am in a position to pay the fees on time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer in buying two dairy cows and goats worthy of KES 35400. This has been my wish of owning them but because of my financial status, I could not afford them. I later paid cleared school fees arrears for y children and they are now studying without being sent home now and again to collect fees. Also, I expanded my hotel business which I am currently running and I am glad am getting good returns from it. With the amount of money that had had remained, I bought enough foodstuffs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means upscaling my farming as well as supporting my children's education. To have this done, I intend to buy an oxen and ox plough at $400, that will help me to prepare my 4 acre piece of land on time and this will mean more harvests, hence food security to my family. On the other hand, I also plan to use the second transfer to pay school fees for my children. This will help them settle in school and perhaps improve in their performance.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The morning is the happiest part of my day because waking up healthy with my children gives me the feeling of happiness and re-energized for the day's household chores. Unlike in the afternoon when I am ever busy and evening finds me when I am fully exhausted.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Charcoal burning has been my job for a long time but this has never been reliable to me due to my deteriorating health. This has forced me to depend on my husband who also solely depend on burning charcoal, a job that earn us very little and sometimes we skip our meals and the most painful thing is failing to educate my children. Therefore, the lack of a reliable source of income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life.
