How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My only desire at the moment is to improve my dairy farming practices. I am aiming to start sourcing for Artificial Insemination(AI) services instead of using conventional methods. This will lead to the production of bigger calves that produce more milk and this will lead to an increase in my income from the dairy project. Even though it will take a long time to enjoy its fruits, I am determined to wait.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly was fair in their enrollment process since all the eligibles households were enrolled without any discrimination. With the unconditional financial aid that we received, we were able to improve our living standards in different ways by concentrating on our goals.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to work for a Telecom company but got retrenched in the year 2018 and since then, I have been depending on dairy farming. I am glad that my wife has been supportive in paying for our bills and school fees for our three children at different levels of education. With my second transfer, I spent KES 16500 to pay two months' house rent for my son at the university since he does not live inside the school hostels and gave him KES 10500 as upkeep money for the two months. I used the remaining amount to purchase a dairy cow worth KES 30000 after topping up some amount. This is an investment that will lead to an increase in my income as a result of an increase in milk production when it calves.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 11pm while asleep when I was awakened by a phone call from a friend informing me he had received the GiveDirectly transfers. On checking my phone, I confirmed to have received KES55000 and I was very excited.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is payment of school fees for my kids. Before the transfers, I had planned to sell one of my cows for school fees payment but GiveDirectly came in on time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES32000 on payment of school fees for my kids in college and high school. The rest I intend to use in purchase a high quality dairy cow. I normally rely on dairy farming in order to pay school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will enable me to expand my dairy business. I have 3 cows that enable me to sell milk to Siongiroi milk plant. The milk that I get from the cows is less and I plan to buy a good breed that goes for KES 50000 so that I can boost the milk that I get daily. Selling more milk means that I will earn more money. I plan to settle a few arrears for my children who are in school with KES 40000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being jobless and having a family to take care of has been a challenge to me. Having a supportive wife who has ensured that the children are fed and have no arrears in school and so that has brought me joy and contentment in the last 6 months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was retrenched in 2018 from my job and I have not had another one since that time. Supporting my family with the little money that I earn from selling milk has been a challenge to me and expanding this will mean that I will be able to meet my family's needs comfortably.
