How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in that I now have enough water for my family. In the past I used to walk for long distance to fetch water and this used to take most of my time. I am now happy since I no longer take most of my time fetching water and I can now have enough time to work in my farm. I also used part of transfer to start a poultry farming which is a constant source of income to meet my basic needs and I no longer depend on my husband to cater for the basic needs of my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly does well by giving unconditional cash transfers to households and in my opinion I do not see anything that Give Directly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used my transfer to buy a water tank for storing water during the dry season. In the past I could walk for a long distance to fetch water for domestic use. I did not also have enough water storage containers and I could even go to fetch water twice a day. I am now happy since I have enough water for household use and I no longer walk for a long distance to fetch water. I also used part of my transfer to start a poultry project and the income I get can cater my family basic needs and I no longer depend on my spouse to provide all the basic needs as I used to do in the past.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the house that I built using the transfer. It has been my big dream to have a decent and a bigger kitchen but since I rely on farming I have been able to build one since the little I get from farming I spent it on my children school fee and on other household basic needs. I had small old thatched hut which I used it as my kitchen as well as a living room for my children. My hut was too small that it could not allow more than a bed and a seat inside. We have always been forced to leave some of my children to sleep on a mat on the flour and I had always felt unhappy of this. I had been feeling so ashamed whenever I had visitors since it has been so unpleasing and uncomfortable to squeeze them in such a small house. Currently, I am so thankful and confident of my home.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was awoken by an incoming message notification in my phone. On checking it some minutes past 5 AM, to my surprise, it was a confirmation message that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and immediately woke up my husband to inform him. He was also happy with the money. We were left sleepless and we started planning on when and where we could withdraw it.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my transfer to build a kitchen. It has been my longtime goal to build a decent and bigger kitchen. Even though I had an old, thatched hut that I used as a kitchen and a living room for my children, we have not been having a comfortable life since it was too small and could hot allow more than a bed and a seat in the house. We have always been forced to let my children sleep on a mat on the floor more so I have not been able to accommodate my visitor whenever I have. I spent a portion of the money on household items specifically a bed and a chair now that I have a bigger house to allow in two beds and a chair I bought a bed for my children who had always been spending their nights on the mat on the floor. I bought food with part of the money since I could see the little I was remaining with could not last long enough to the next harvesting season. I used part of the money on clothing at least to add to what we had.
