How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having accomplished the plan of extending a room for my children and cementing the floor of our kitchen using the transfer, my goal now is to build a store that will be used to store our animal feeds and to cement our milking shed. This is because the store we currently have is old and our animal feeds usually get spoiled during the rainy season while the shade is always dusty during the dry season. I am planning to start saving money from the sale of milk and start buying the building materials in bits while I also pay school fees for my 4 children in different levels of education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did an excellent job in our village in uplifting our lives and the fact that money was directly sent to people and there was no discrimination during the enrollment process made it stand out from other organizations. People were able to pay school fees for their children among other things while I was able to extend a room for my children and make our kitchen more modern.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my second transfer, I spent the all amount to extend our daughter's room and to cement the floors of our kitchen. I settled on this since the bedroom was small as it can accommodate two beds only and due to this, two of them had to sleep in the sitting room. I was not happy with this arrangement since they would at times have to sleep late waiting for people to be done eating or with the discussion they're having. In addition, the walls of our kitchen are made of timber, and smearing mud when tidying up the floor had started attracting termites. I am happy that it will last longer than I had imagined and cleaning it is now easier and sell time-consuming.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was some minutes past 10 o'clock when I received a Mpesa message which I read over and over and after checking my account balance, I got excited to know that the promised aid was finally in my account. After breaking the news to my family, my wife was so excited, and we had to get ready to visit the nearest shopping center for our first purchases. This was my first time to ever own such an amount of money and we gave thanks to God as a family. With the money in my account, we were assured that our daughter would be able to join college without us selling any of our assets.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My children's education has always been my priority as I do not want them to end up depending on any available casual works which will make their families survive from hand to mouth as I do. Because of this, I have always worked hard to ensure that I pay their school fees on time so that they can concentrate on their studies. Before GiveDirectly came for enrollment, I was torn in between taking a loan and selling one of my cows so as to get money to use in paying school fees for my daughter who will be joining university this month. After receiving the transfer, we set aside some amount that will enable us to achieve this and I am glad and hopeful that she will fulfill her dream of becoming a graduate. This has made my life different as I do not have to worry about anything anymore.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 17000 to purchase some building materials that I am planning to use to extend a children's room from my main house since they currently sleep in our kitchen. Also, I spent KES 7000 to purchase a suitcase case and a laptop bag for my daughter and I am planning to spend the remaining KES 30000 to pay for her school fees as she will be joining university soon.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better education for my children. Currently, I have 3 children who are in university, I have been struggling in paying their school fees. In most cases, they have been at home due to a lack of money. When I receive this money I will clear their school fees, I will pay ksh 80,000 for the 3 children and that will enable them graduate successful. The remaining amount I will buy foodstuffs for the family and clothing's.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. The best gift ever is being alive and when I am sure that I have livestock to go and sell, by this am sure my family will have something to eat at the end of the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of money to meet my family's basic needs such as proper healthcare, School fee's and foodstuffs. Since I depend only in buying and selling of livestock, when COVID-19 cases ware reported and livestock auction was stopped, life has been hard for me, getting daily meals has been a bigger challenge.
