How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in many ways now than It would have been at the event that I had not received the transfers. The total number of assets that I own has greatly increased since I received these transfers. I now have a dairy cow and a family house. These are things I never thought I could own them anytime soon. The small amounts of money that I got from my daily casual jobs could only get enough for me to feed the family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did so well in giving the cash to the poor unconditionally. This gave us the beneficiaries the freedom to choose what to do with the money and hence a great sense of satisfaction and respect from the said organisation. On the other hand I did not have any experience with GiveDirectly operations that I did not like.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used my second transfer to buy a cow worth KES 25000. For a long time, we have had a problem of lack of milk in our family. Milk is a valuable commodity for food in our community especially for a young and growing family. It had become so expensive for us to buy milk from our neighbor but we could do very little to salvage the situation. The little money I got from my daily hustles could only get enough for us to buy food for the day and often left me with nothing to save. This made it impossible for me to get enough money that could see us buy a dairy cow of our own. Getting the GiveDirectly transfers enabled us buy this dairy cow which we are optimistic will give us enough milk for use and the surplus for selling to get extra income. We also used the remainder of our second transfer to build a new house for the family. We were living in a small house that was hardly enough for a growing family like mine. We now have a bigger and classy house that has elevated our status in the community. We shall be forever be grateful to the support we got from GiveDirectly.
