Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Owning the heifer and goats is the biggest difference in my daily life. I could not have managed to purchase any of these animals if I was to buy them at my cost. I thank GiveDirectly for their financial support has enabled me to achieve this. These are to me assets that I can depend on in case of any financial hardship. I am expecting them to reproduce and increase in number soon. Apart from the livestock, I also built an extension of my house to accommodate my children. I am happy that they no longer seek shelter from the neighbourhood at night as it was before.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was woken up by a message notification on my phone at around 3 am. I thought it was an emergency or the normal Safaricom alerts but to my surprise, it was a message from GuveDirectly. I had finally received my first transfer as promised by them. I was very thankful to them for this financial assistance.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to purchase a heifer and two goats. With these living assets, I am able to lean on them in case of any financial problem as they will be reproducing and increase in number. In addition to this, I also spent a portion of the transfer to purchase building materials that include building poles and pieces of iron sheets for an extension of my house. I am extending a room to accommodate my children who have been seeking shelter in the neighbourhood at night for a long time. I also paid a portion of the transfer to clear school fees for my children for them to be allowed back in school. With the remaining amount, I bought household basic needs such as foodstuffs and other households expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I value education a lot and this is one thing that I promised to offer my children. I am struggling financially at the moment because I discontinued mine at the primary level since my parents were not supportive enough. This is something that I do not wish to happen to my children. I have five children who are at the primary level, and my biggest concern every day is how to get their school fees. This is now going to change once I receive my transfers. Firstly, I will put part of the transfers in a long term plan, and that is to invest in livestock rearing. This is going to cater to their educational needs once they are in higher levels of education. And for the short term plan, I am going to start a grocery business here at home. This is going to help me meet the daily family's needs like food, clothing and other basic necessities with much ease. With support from my husband, I believe things are going to change for the better, and that is what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day. Usually, I wake up very early in the morning to prepare children for school. Thereafter, I attend to household chores and the hardest part is drawing water from water pan which is over five kilometers away. My day is always strenuous and it is only in the evening when my children are back from school that I get time to rest. We usually share dinner together and that makes all of us happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of adequate resources has been the biggest hardship I've faced in my life. Mine is a polygamous household, and our husband being a casual laborer in Mombasa, his income has not been enough to meet all the family needs. This resulted in a financial constraint and subsequently family conflict that led my co-wife to leave home. She left me with all her children and raising them together with mine has not been an easy task. She doesn't support me in any way and that has cost me a lot.
