How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next year and beyond, my plan is to save up enough money targeting up to $ 1000. I work as a businesswoman selling cereals in a nearby centre. With GiveDirectly transfers, I have come to realize and appreciate how accumulated money can help somebody achieve their dreams in a very short period of time. I have grandchildren whom I take care of and making such investments will only make my work easier. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly and what it has done in my life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving support in form of cash. Looking at how different people invested the money differently is so encouraging. Some were able to build houses while others were able to pay school fees for their children while others were able to start and are now sustaining businesses. This to me was a beautiful thing that GiveDirectly should continue to do. I did not find anything with GiveDirectly that I thought should be corrected but everything was done in a good manner.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my second transfer, I used $420 to buy 6 goats for keeping. I then used the remaining amount of $100 to buy clothes and food for the family. I chose to invest in goats since they easily mature and would give me returns within the shortest time possible. This will in turn improve my living standards and ultimately that of my family. I will also have a chance of using this investment to improve my cereal selling business where I will sell some of them and increase my stock. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling me and my family have plans which we would not have had were it not for GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in town doing my business of selling cereals. When I heard a message notification from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I went back I informed my spouse and children and everyone was so happy. We had the plan to use part of the money on purchasing bricks to build a better house for the family. I withdraw the money the following day and started spending it according to our plans.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily is being able to purchase bricks. This cost me KES 30,000. I wish to build a better and more spacious house for my family on the land that we bought using our savings. We had always wished to relocate to that land but we did not have the money to buy the building materials. I depend on the farming and cereal business that I have started. This gives us a small income and this is only for household basic needs and school fees for our children. We had planned on relocating after we had built a house. When we received the transfer we felt so happy and we decided to start purchasing the materials that are required. We will be doing this until we are ready to construct the house. I am so grateful because Giving directly has given us hope. We will use part of the second transfer on building materials. GiveDirectly has changed our living standards and given us chance to fulfill our dreams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 30,000 on purchasing bricks and planning on building a better and more spacious house for my family. This was one of the main plans since I wanted to relocate to the farm that I had purchased with my savings. I spend KES 20,000 on purchasing goats. This is one of the best projects that I had always wished to start. Goats reproduce twice per year and it is easy to keep them. I will sell them in the future to buy a dairy cow. I will be in a position to get enough milk for the family. I spend the rest of the money on food and clothes for my family members. I am so grateful for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For the past 30 years, we have been living in a house made of timber. This house has been invaded by termites and may collapse any time soon. Repairing and renovating this house is costly to us because the floor and the timber are affected by rains. Water sips through the floor hence causing cracks whereas the bottom side of the timber rots. My dream has been to establish a permanent brick-made house but because of the limited income, I get from my grocery I have been unable to accomplish this on time. This amount will therefore enable me to achieve this goal because currently, I have sand and bricks. The money will cater for other building materials and cost such as cement, timber, and labor.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The availability of adequate rainfall in the past 6 months has brought happiness into our lives. This is because the livestock we rear have acquired adequate amount of feeds and water hence giving us more milk.It is from the sale of 10 litres daily that we have been able to provide adequately for the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of finance is the biggest challenge am currently. My husband and I depend on casual jobs for a living.I ran a grocery store whereas my husband works as a carpenter. These jobs are inconsistent and the earnings we get are too minimal to meet our household needs. We earn an average of KES 4000 per week yet weekly expenditures are over KES 6000. This has become a challenge to an extent we are in a huge debt.
