How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My shop space currently costs me $15 per month. I'd love to be in a position where I could open my own shop without having to pay rent. This could also imply that, because it is larger, I can take on more clients and possibly hire more staff.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly excels at identifying those in need and making their dreams a reality. People in our area have purchased livestock, built houses, and so on as a result of GiveDirectly transfers. I have nothing to add to what they do except to ask that they continue to assist us for many years to come.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I work at the Kataret Center, where I make both ready-made and tailored outfits. I specialize in female Kitenge outfits, which cost $8.5 in labor, $3 in labor, and $1.2 in lining. It provides a decent living, but between that and the $56 my husband earns every time he sells a sack of maize at Kataret Center, we were hard pressed to do much more than meet our basic needs. The funds from GiveDirectly enabled us to purchase a new female cow, expand my business, and construct a home for myself and my children. It's a two-bedroom house with a kitchen that can comfortably accommodate our four children, my husband, and myself. While I occasionally receive an influx of business when uniforms are required, netting $6.5 per dress, our incomes would never allow us to do what the GiveDirectly transfers did. The remainder was spent on food and school fees for our children. Our first to third children all attend Kavandisi School, where they are in Class 8, Grade 6, and PP2. We pay $4.5, $3.5, and $6, respectively, from the eldest to the youngest, despite the fact that the youngest is only 1 month and 2 weeks old and only required basic needs to be met by GiveDirectly funds. We would not have made it through everything we did if it hadn't been for GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy selling at my shop when I heard my phone vibrating while charging but I did not bother checking it. After some time, I heard some of my customers chatting happily while selecting clothes claiming that GiveDirectly had sent the promised money. I decided to check my phone after serving them and I became so happy when I realized that I had received mine an hour ago. This money gave me hope that I would finally be able to boost my business.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
With the transfer, I was able to boost my business by buying more stock. With this, I have been able to make more sales and profits over the last few weeks. This is because 99% of the people were shopping for clothes after receiving their transfers. Due to this, I am happy that I have been able to meet most of our needs on time aside from expanding my business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We mostly depend on dairy farming in my region since maize farming is no longer profitable due to pests and varying climatic conditions. My clothes business which I started five years ago has been earning me some income that I use in sorting some of our needs. Upon receiving my transfer, I used KES 30000 to purchase a dairy cow so that our income from milk sales will increase. In addition, I spent KES 20000 to boost my business by buying more stock since most people were shopping for clothes after receiving their transfers. Using the remaining amount, I bought some new clothes for my three children so that they would not be left out while others were celebrating.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will enable me to buy more land and expand my business. We bought land six years ago from my neighbor and we have divided it with my mother-in-law. The space that I have is small and therefore, I have to expand it. I also have a boutique that I operate at the nearby center and since it is my family's source of income, I plan to use KES 20,000 to expand it to enable me to earn more money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am grateful that although our businesses have been low, we have been able to earn money for food and pay for our children's education and this has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our main income-generating activity is buying and selling maize that we source from farmers around our area. The business has been low lately due to the unavailable maize caused by drought and therefore, unstable business and reduced income is the major challenge that I am facing.
