How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I depend on temporary casual labor of washing clothes at the nearby market center to support our basic needs like food. The goal that I have at the moment is to start a small cafeteria at our nearby market. This will be a reliable source of income for the family since the profit will support us to cater for our basic needs. Additionally, I would be glad to support my spouse in raising the kids.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in coming up with a cash transfer program in our village. Additionally, the cash being unconditional and non-refundable was such a nice idea. We had the opportunity to spend the transfer on what we choose to transform our living conditions. I am very grateful for being enrolled in the program. All the processes were open and fair, I do not see anything that did not go well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Providing our children with a quality education has always been my heart's desire. I spent $150 of the recent transfer to clear their fee arrears for them since they had a huge fee balance that was forcing their education frequently be interrupted. Additionally, I used a bigger portion of the remaining amount to complete the construction of a two-roomed irony roofed house for the family. This was because we were residing in an old structure that was about to collapse. I was always worried that it may fall when there are strong winds something that was giving me sleepless nights. Lastly, I bought proper bedding for $110, earlier, I was sleeping on the floor with rugs that were uncomfortable. Currently, I am happy that we are enjoying the nights on modern and comfortable bedding.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had just gotten back home from fetching water when I received a message. Since I don't know how to read, I told my daughter who was at home to check what the message was all about. She told me that I had received my first transfer and I was so happy that I was going to build a house and safe my family from a crumbling house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have never thought that I would build a house on my own and every rainy or windy season reminded me of how dangerous the house that I was living in was. Seeing my new semi-permanent house almost complete gives me hope to live another day. I couldn't have done this on my own and there is no greater joy than this. My children have also had easy time in school as they are nolonger being send home nearly everyday and this has helped them concentrate and improve on their studies.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband who is the sole provider of the family works as a casual labourer in construction sites. With the daily wages that he earns averaging to KES 300 per day and given that the jobs are not reliable, it hasn't been easy providing basic needs for our family and paying school fees for our three children. My children had been out of school for the better part of last term due to school fees arrears and the school head could not believe in me anymore because I had made several empty promises. Besides this, we were living in a very weak muddy house and I was living in fear that it will crumble one day and put the life of the my loved one in danger. When I was enrolled in program, my husband and I agreed that we would spend the transfers to build a better house and settle debts that we had. I spend KES 35000 to build a two rooms semi-permanent structure and I'm looking forward to do roofing once I receive my second transfer. I also spend KES 7000 to offset fees arrears and the balance to buy food and other basic necessities. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the financial support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
With the cash in our hands, we are going to make a lot of family transformation. Since I was married, I have been sharing a room with my children until they are of age when I am forced to let them stay with my brother's -in-law children. In addition, with cracks in every corner, the house is in a state of falling. Our priority will therefore be renovating the house. We will spend 15 000 KES to strengthen the walls and add another room for our two children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We have been taking meals on the ground for lacking chairs and a table. It has been always hectic as we are faced by disturbance from chicken and ducks making it impossible to enjoy meals. A month ago, we took four chairs and a plastic table on credit. Though we are faced with a loan, the joy that comes with taking meals without stress is unmeasurable.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The land on which we live (about an acre) cannot accommodate the whole extended family. Our first born got married and since there is no space for him to erect a house, he was forced to rent. He has been relying on us to support him in paying rent since he is jobless. Occasionally, he has been locked out of the house due to failing to pay the monthly remissions. It has been our wish to purchase a piece of land for our children but due to financial limitations, we have not been able to.
