How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I've had one desire pounding in my heart and consuming my waking thoughts. Nothing would make me happier than to purchase land and construct my own home. I am currently living with my parents, and I am more than ready for that to end. In the short run, one of my top priorities is to expand my salon business and, as a result , improve our family's financial situation. All i truly desire in life is to provide the best possible life for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
To say that GiveDirectly has transformed my life would be to downplay a miracle. In order to convey what it is that GiveDirectly represents to me and countless other recipients in our community, one would have to see all the lives that have been transformed . GiveDirectly has given us all a new lease on life, and for that, we are all grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The past two years have been filled with anxiety and hard work. Trying to build and run a salon in Ganze Town has taken everything I've had to offer emotionally, physically, and financially. GiveDirectly choosing me to receive the transfers meant that I could inject much-needed funds into the business. Lotions, water, and sodas, all for my clients, were among the items I purchased. Trying to make the salon a heaven of relaxation and peace was greatly aided by these additions. I also added more braids, wigs, weaves, and other hair accessories to use on my clients. With no husband and relying solely on my income to support myself and my children, it can be difficult to raise $35 to pay for my shop's rent.As a result, part of the funds were used to service some of the months in advance. My two children are in school. They both attend the PCEA Primary School in Grade 2 and PP 1, and their tuition is $40 and $20, respectively. The funds helped me in paying a good part of this in advance. Given the challenges I had been facing, such as the drought, which had resulted in a low yield from our 1.5-acre farm, which we use for domestic purposes, it was a blessing to have GiveDirectly shine some much-needed hope into our lives.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was some minutes to 6 pm when I was almost closing my salon business because time was up when I received a message on my phone. Since I was holding the phone in my right hand, I quickly checked only my eyes to bump into a huge figure of KES 55000.00. I keenly read the message and I was so happy to learn that I had received the first transfer from GiveDirectly. This happiness was from two angles, one being that I had received the money and I would do the things that I was unable due to lack of money. Secondly, I viewed it as a guarantee that I would receive the second transfer since I am in the GiveDirectly records.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before GiveDirectly came into my life, I was living under debts that had taken my confidence away. Electricity bills, my license had expired and the rent was giving me a hard time in life, not to mention how my business was collapsing. I am grateful for the support that I received from GiveDirectly because through it, I was able to settle all the debts thus restoring my confidence. Again, I was able to revive my business and it is now progressing well. This could not be possible if it were not for GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since my saloon business was almost collapsing due to a lack of materials, I opted to equip it after receiving the money. Therefore, I added a stock worthy of KES 35000.00. By doing so I ensured life to my business and I am sure it will serve me well. I also used KES 5000.00 to pay for electricity, KES 3000.00 to pay for my business license, and KES 3500.00 for rent. Thereafter, I paid KES 5000.00 school fees for my child covering two terms.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I run a hairdressing and cosmetic business in Ganze town which I really need to inject more capital. This money has come at an opportune time because there is demand for many items that I do not have. I will invest 40,000 KES for this. My daughter will also be joining grade 1in at the end of the month. I will therefore set aside 10,000 KES for her school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Seeing myself having the ability to provide for my two daughters brings me a lot of joy. I am proud of myself and my children as well. They are very healthy and that's a reason to thank God.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
It's not easy being the sole bread winner. I am a single mother of two who depends on my hairdressing business to raise my children. The business has on and off peak seasons and it becomes very hard to get consistent income. The cost of living has also risen and sometimes the items needed in my business becomes a problem to afford.
