How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am planning to work hard by feeding my two calving cows so that they can get healthy calves and by so doing, I will be able to get a lot of milk and sell to boost my daily income. Secondly, I am planning to work very hard in my dressmaking shop and boost it with my little income. Lastly, from the little income I will be getting, I am planning to support my husband to get a stable job so that we can educate and support our children without any problems.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I thank GiveDirectly for the far It has bought me. My happiness about the transfers I received for the two months, a sum of $.1100 is beyond measurement. My family too is happy and my children can not wait to pass the phone to me and celebrate whenever I get a call from GiveDirectly. May God bless you. On the other hand, I do not have any complaints about the project, all has been well. Thank you so much GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before I started receiving the transfers, life was so hard we could not get healthy meals or even pay school fees, my husband had lost his stable job and he is a form 4 leaver. This means that he would go for a longer period of time before getting another job but now hustle in a construction site. The second transfer came during the Christmas season and it helped me in buying clothes and food for my family. It was a celebration season and my children were never left behind, they really enjoyed the healthy meals and nice clothing which they had lacked before. In addition, I also bought four goats at $50 each. Even though I am still looking for a job, I am currently operating a tailoring shop that I boosted with $50 from the second transfer. I am glad that the dressmaking skills I acquired in school have been helpful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
No sooner had I finished preparing lunch at around 1 pm than a message popped into my phone. Since I was engaged with other chores I did not hear the message alert tone. At around 2 pm when I took my phone, I saw an envelop-like icon on the screen of the phone. Upon checking, it was the first transfer of $550 sent to my account by GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with joy for receiving a huge sum of money that was not a loan.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before getting the GiveDirectly transfer, my life was not pleasing. Getting daily food was a real struggle and at some point, I had to go without food for at least two days a week. As of now, I am glad that GiveDirectly empowered me and I have an investment besides the sewing machine which aids me in providing for the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before withdrawing the money, I sat to plan how best I was going to utilize it to benefit me not only today but also in the future. Upon withdrawal, I opted to buy some livestock which would serve as an investment. I bought two cows for $160 and two goats for $60. I did this because goats have a fast birth rate and have ready markets since they are not expensive. So they are for short-term solutions. On the other side, cows have a higher value and by the time they multiply, I will be able to sell at a good profit. I also used $15 to repair my broken sewing machine which is now serving my family as a source of income. After that, my three children were sent back home from school for school fees. Therefore, I used $65 to settle their school fees and they are now happily settled in school. For the remaining amount, I bought some food for the family. Currently, I feel grateful for the achievements of having a livestock investment as well as repairing the broken sewing machine I have made through GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My lovely mother who was the only hope for us died 3 years ago. She had an ambition of educating her children to university so that they can become better people in the future. Her death broke my heart completely and thought that everything is done. By the time she died, I was about to join high school but unfortunately, I could not make it. I decided to join a vocational college where I pursued fashion and design courses. Though I completed it, getting a sewing machine has not been easy due to financial constraints. Receiving this transfer means fulfilling my desire. I am planning to spend KES 30,000 to purchase the machine, and materials, and rent the building where I will be running my business. This will generate income for my family of 5 members. Other than that, I will spend the remaining amount to construct a house for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
One of my elder brothers completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary school ( K.C.S.E) early this year and he passed very well. This brought a lot of joy to my life because I did not expect that to happen. Finishing high school for him was a miracle because of financial constraints. In his last year equity bank offered him a scholarship which was great support I still appreciate.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is the biggest hardship I am currently facing. Though I am a professional in fashion and design, getting a sewing machine for myself had been challenging. Currently, I work as a charcoal vendor in the village. The job is tedious and it has brought a lot of health complications in my life. Sometimes getting something to eat is also challenging.
