How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am planning to work hard by feeding my calving cow so that it can get a healthy calf and by so doing, I will be able to get a lot of milk and sell it to boost my daily income. Secondly, I am planning to work very hard on my farm to get a good harvest and feed my family also pay my children’s school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am so happy about the form of help I have received. My children are so happy to have received the money too. I saved the GiveDirectly number on my phone and they know it. They are always happy whenever they see it pop up calling on my screen. They always don't hesitate to look at it and pass the phone to me or even look for me everywhere to pick up the phone and talk to the call center team. No challenges at the moment but to say a big thank you.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of five, two daughters, and three sons. My husband works as a casual worker on a construction site while I am a maize, cabbage, and beans farmer. Before the transfers came life was very difficult, with no money, school fees, and enough food for my family. The most recent transfer I received from GiveDirectly brought a big change in my family’s life. I bought a cow for $25 so that it could calve and I can milk and sell it to my neighbors hence increasing my daily income. I managed to also pay school fees arrears of $20 for my two children who are in form one and four respectively. The remaining $10 helped me in buying healthy food, good clothes, and other household items which my family had lacked before, Thank you so much GiveDirectly, You have put a smile on my face.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I became so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. It was around 5:00 pm when I checked my phone and confirmed that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was with my children and they could tell that I had received money from GiveDirectly and they were all happy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that my family is more happy than it was before we started receiving payments from GiveDirectly. When we received the money and I was able to set aside some to build a better house for my child and even buy clothes for them meant that everyone in the family was very happy. My child who would have to travel for longer distances to sleep over is now the most happy having been able to build a better house for him which is now complete.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 20000 to build a new house for my child who had for a long time suffered and had to go sleep over a friend's place. This made me very uncomfortable about it but I did not have enough money to be able to put up one yet. I feel happy that I was finally able to build one and also pay school fees for him with the money that remained.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved agricultural activities in our family. Agriculture is our only source of income in this family and lately I have been struggling to carry on with most of the activities because the cost of inputs rose sharply this year and we have not been able to purchase anything despite this being the planting season. I am so worried about our income this year because we were planning to narrow down the multiple crops types that we usually grow to ensure that every month we have something to sell. These transfers will ensure that we are covered up for for all the inputs we need for the year and our income will not be affected.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The continuous rainy season in this place has given me happiness as a farmer because I get to plant any time of the month without having to worry about the rains.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The cost of living has gone up recently and our income remains the same. I was expecting it to even get worse because our income source was going to be affected this year. This poses a big challenge on our ability to sustain ourselves as a family. We have school fees to pay and food to buy and money must be spent on this. We are now staring at a situation where we shall get deeper into poverty which is a big concern for us.
