How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I operate a charcoal business which is very is not lucrative and so tiresome, especially when carrying the sacks. I, therefore, have a new goal which is to open a kiosk shop since I have already found the right location. In addition, we only gave one shop in the village which means there is a high demand in having an additional one. I am optimistic that this business will enable me to provide for my family without any difficulties.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job in the entire village by ensuring that they visited every compound. Also, the enrolment process was free and fair for all the beneficiaries. We are all grateful for the financial support since it has transformed our lives positively.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a pair of oxen at KES 34000. I have been longing to have them for years but I couldn't afford them because of the financial hardships I was going through. Through them, I will be able to plough my farm in time without having to strain like before whereby I was using my own hands. I am therefore proud of owning these assets, all attributed to GiveDirectly. I also bought a few building poles and iron sheets with the remaining amount. This was for the construction of a new house because the previous one was very small and it could not accommodate my eight children. They have been sleeping at their grandmother's house for years which they were not comfortable with. I am now happy because we are sheltering under one roof with all my family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 am, I was in my house preparing to leave for charcoal burning in the forest. I heard a message notification on my phone. I had to stop what I was doing to check my phone since it was almost at this time that GiveDirectly promised to send the cash transfer aid. I was extremely happy for receiving the transfer since I thought it was a scam the first time. I was very happy since I was about to accomplish my projects which I had been longing to start.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am living a happy life after accomplishing my desire of owning oxen for plowing my farm. I am positive that I will have enough harvest from my farm hence food security. Previously, I had to hire them from my neighbor at a fee that is relatively expensive.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 to purchase two oxen which will assist me in plowing my farm. Previously, I was using hands or sometimes hiring from my neighbor for KES 1,700 per acre. I will be able to get enough food for the family because I will be able to complete the land preparation on time since we usually receive short rains. I also used KES 3000 to pay all the fees arrears for my 3 children who are still in primary school, they were always sent home due to school fees which drastically affect their performance. In addition, I used KES 6000 to purchase building poles for the construction of a spacious house since the one I had is very small. I was sharing one room with my 8 kids which is an embarrassment once I received guests. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing enough food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
As a farmer, lack of enough resources has limited my farming activities. Receiving this money will save me the cost of ploughing my farm since I intend to buy two oxen at a cost of 30,000 Kenya Shillings. I have been depending on hiring the oxen from my neighbor to till up to 8 acres of land which is quite expensive.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Chatting with friends and family relieves me of stress. I get this time in the afternoon hours when I am around my compound , free after a busy morning. Afternoon is therefore the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Farming has been a big let down in this region due to prolonged drought. This has led to lack of food and less income since it is very unreliable. I try supplementing farm activities with preparing and selling charcoal. This is usually a long and tiresome process that earns so little. I have a wife and 8 children all looking up to me to support all their needs. This has been very hard. As we speak my children have been sent home for school fees. Little and unreliable income to support the family's needs is my biggest hardship.
