What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After withdrawing the second transfer money, I used KES 20000.00 to build a new spacious house since the one I had was very small and old. I also bought a solar panel for KES 12000.00. This panel will provide us with some light since we have been using the local lighting system which uses paraffin and the cost of paraffin is now very high. Buying the solar panel will not only reduce the cost of paraffin we have been incurring but also produce adequate light to the home compound. Thereafter, I bought two goats for KES 7000.00 and saved the remaining amount for family use.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I personally appreciate the assistance I got from GiveDirectly. First the organization enabled me to get a good spacious house and also a solar panel to provide light. If it were not for GiveDirectly I could not have managed to acquire these. This organization has uplifted the life standards of many and we are very happy for it. Under all circumstances I do not see any weakness that needs to be addressed for GiveDirectly.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
When I received the second transfer, a new goal of starting a saloon business emerged. But since I had already kept other plans before I opted to proceed with the initial plans and reserved the saloon issue. Once I get some cash in future, I will implement this idea because it will be an income generating activity and it will help my family.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer, which was KES38000, on building our house because we needed a new and bigger house since the one we were living in previously was too small for our young and growing family. I was planning and desired to build a new and better house but I was not ready to effect it yet because I neither had the ability nor means to do so, therefore, I did not waste time or even had a single thought about it. I also spent KES12000 to buy a solar panel that has a couple of lights and a charging slot for mobile phones. I bought this because I needed light, as I believe it is a prerequisite requirement in the house, as well as a source of security both inside and around the house. Also, its ability to charge mobile phones makes me so proud as I am able to extend a helping hand to my neighbors that do not have electricity or solar panels of their own, and my visitors too, do not have to be worried about their phones running low on power. I am so happy and proud, thanks to GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference I can cite in my daily life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is the two projects that I was able to undertake and complete. I desired to have a bigger and better house and I got it, as well as I am now a very proud solar panel owner and my house and compound have light. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the assistance.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so happy when I received the money because it was a lot of cash, an amount that I have never received ever since I was born. I was so grateful since I knew I was going to get the things that I desired but had no means and ability to get them.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a reliable source of income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. I am an unskilled person and getting a good job to sustain my family of four has been a great challenge to me. The only source of livelihood is charcoal vending a job that earns me KES 400 per week which I spend on food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon because it is when I can rest. Unlike in the morning and evening when I am busy with my charcoal work.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a semi-permanent and spacious house for my family. Currently, I am living in a one-bedroom house, the house is not spacious enough for my family. I am planning to spend KES 80000 of my transfers to construct a two-bedroom house and a sitting room so that we can live a decent life. Other than that, I will spend the balance to buy one ingenious dairy cow, the milk produced will be for both domestic consumption and sale.
