What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The house I am currently living, is about to fall down because of the weakening poles. The roof is also leaking since it was made of Makuti, which was partly blown away by the strong wind. I heavily depend on the farm to earn a living and because of the drought in our area, I no longer work on the farm. Upon receiving my recent transfer, I spent KSH 1300 in buying cement and continue building my house. Since I do not have a job, I spend part of the money towards building the house and the other in buying food for the family. Besides buying cement and food for my family, I also spent KSH 1000 in buying four chicken. Because I am currently jobless, I ventured into poultry farming as an alternative way of earning an income. Once the chicken multiplies in numbers, I will sell the eggs and also the chicken and earn from that.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Last year my village experienced drought immensely and it really affected us as a whole including my family because we rely on the rain for crops which in turn help us in having a meal in our homes during the harvest season. Therefore when I received the money my initial though was to cater for my nourishment and nutrition for my family so I went ahead and bought maize flour and sugar which cost me KES 1,000. As for what was left which was KES 2,000 I decide to invest it in the project that I had been carrying on for a while which was buying hens. At times I bought chicks and reared them myself but at times I bought readily available hens and took them to the market. This time round was not any different so I bought seven hens at a price of KES 250 and KES 200 depending on the size and sold them in the market at prices ranging from KES 300 to KES 500.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to my own opinion, I feel that Give directly is a good organization that cares about vulnerable people like me. Many people in the village are praising them for trying to alleviate the poverty in the village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The first transfer I was able to buy a goat that would grow multiply. This would be a passive income in that in case of emergencies I can sell the goat. The second transfer I was able to pay school fees worth KES.2000 for a college-ongoing child. It has been a tough year, the drought making it worse as there is not enough money to cater to our daily needs. The other KES.1000 was used to buy food for the family and we are lucky enough that we have not gone to bed hungry.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On that particular day, I was at home with my friend having a good time as we told stories when my phone rang with a message. Since I had company I ignored it and later when he left checked to see who had sent the message. I was overjoyed as the money came in sooner than what was told.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference I see in my day-to-day life is that since I started receiving this money I things are getting better. I will have a stable financial income that will support my family during these tough times. This money will also be capital for my business to grow.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was able to invest my money in a goat. During this drought season, it was relatively affordable to buy a goat. It was worth KES.2000 which was a bargain. The rest of the money was totaled at KES.1000, I bought foodstuff and household items. It has been a struggle to meet my family's basic needs this year but I am thankful to Give directly for stepping up to support us during this time. I can't even begin to tell you the hardships we have been facing this year so I am grateful for this opportunity.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A while ago, I had sectioned a piece of land for vegetable farming. I used to plant vegetables for sale. However, due to lack of rainfall, the farming has come to a standstill. My prayer is to use the transfers for buying tanks, which I will use to harvest water in order to continue with farming, an activity that will me earn a coin.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite being a village elder, I work as a mason. I am always happy when I get a job to earn myself a living.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was blessed with two children, one of whom died of ulcers. The only son I have remained with finished secondary school level last year. Being the only son and child to me, I have always longed to give him the best education I could. However, due to financial constraints, I have even been unable to take him to college to further his studies. He is just around engaging himself in tapping palm wine. It is a job I could not recommend especially to my young and only son.
