How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next year and beyond, I have plans of buying a dairy cow that will help me be more independent financially. I have been thinking about this project for the longest time now but I was unamble to accomplish it because of other priority needs that I had of paying school fees for my child. Now that one of my children is clearing his form four this year, I will be more free and willing to take another loan to buy a dairy cow. This is an investment that will greatly boost my financial status and push me towards being fully financially independent.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving equal amounts of money to all the beneficiaries was very thoughtful of GiveDirectly. This has seen all of us struggle to make ends meet and to do much more than what the money can do in its little form. People have come together in groups to make contributions which they have gone ahead to invest in things that will change their lives in the long run. I personally have benefitted a lot from GiveDirectly funds and I am so grateful for that. I have within this time been able to purchase a water tank, and paid school fees deligently for my children in school. The impact of this cash shall go a long way and I will always be indebted to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used all of my recent transfer to pay school fees for my child who is in secondary school. He is currently in form 3 and I am so grateful and delighted for what the money has enabled me achieve in terms of his education. I have been paying for one child while my husband has been paying for another with the transfers that we both receive from GiveDirectly. These transfers added to the income we receive from farming have seen us pay school fees for our children in an easy manner. I believe without this transfers, it would have been hard to make it through with the high school fees amount that we have to pay.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, my primary objective is to amass the necessary funds by securing a loan. I intend to utilize this borrowed capital for a significant purchase that I plan to make in November. With this investment, I will use it to purchase livestock as an investment that will help me in future. In the past, I've successfully generated funds that allowed me to acquire a water tank, construct a house, and provide education for my children. Currently, I still have two children attending school, and I also benefit from the additional income generated by my dairy cows. This reflects my unwavering commitment to both family support and maintaining a sustainable income source.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
From my perspective, GiveDirectly deserves praise for its inclusive approach of enrolling all household members and maintaining a consistent and reliable provision of financial support. Their meticulous follow-up and monitoring processes contribute significantly to instilling responsibility among the recipients. As for their operations, based on my observations, I haven't identified any notable shortcomings in how they are conducted.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm truly grateful for the $2900 I received recently because I used it to pay off a loan. I had borrowed that money to cover my child's secondary school fees. I began repaying the loan in November, and now, I'm nearly finished with it. I value the support I've received because it enabled me to provide for my child's education. My plan is to clear this loan before considering another one for investment.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next one year and beyond I will be concentrating on payment of school fees for my two children who are at a very critical stage in their studies. One of them is in form four while another one is in form three. I also have a third one that is joining secondary school as from next year. I will keep relying on loans that I take from loan lending institutions to pay their school fees in time and award them an opportunity for a better life ahead. I am so grateful that I can always rely on the monthly transfers that I receive to make such commitments. This is a huge help to me and my family and a change that we will never forget nor take for granted.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does very well by giving equal amount of money to everyone within the village boundary and who was above 18 years. This made all of us fee respected in equal measure. Giving the small amounts monthly was another huge score by GiveDirectly. It has allowed us to organize ourselves in the best ways that we can to make sure that we reap maximumly from it. Personally, I have been able to build a new house, buy a water tank and also taken my children through their education journey much more comfortably. This is a huge impact for me and my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my most recent transfer of $29, I used Used all of it to pay back a loan I had taken to pay school fees for my children who are in their secondary level of education. I took the loan from Hand in Hand in the month of October 2022 and I have been committing a total of $25 per month. I took a loan amounting to $200 which was enough to pay for at least two consecutive terms for my children. I am so glad that with GiveDirectly transfers I can now take such loans and be able to keep my children in school. I do not know how else I would have been able to keep my children in school had it not been for this transfer. In the recent past, I have also taken loans that have seen me put up a better house for our family as well as bought a water tank. I look forward to achieving much more with this transfer that will make me and my family better and happier in the long run.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I want to take a loan of KES30000 to pay school fees and buy a cow. I save KES 2000 every month and I will be receiving the money in May where I will get KES 50,000 and I will buy bricks to start building a house. The house I currently stay in is made of mud and I want to get an improved one. I will then depend on sale of milk and eggs from poultry farming to raise money to buy food items.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
You did well to give every person an equal amount of money since this ensures that people do not fight in their households and responsibilities can be shared. If moving to another area, do as it is here. Everything was also well explained to us and you are still doing that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I took a loan of KES 20,000 in December 2021 to pay school fees for my daughter who is in Form 3. I paid the school fees for the whole year so as to avoid her being sent home to collect school fees. I wanted her to concentrate in school and work harder. I can then concentrate on other things like looking for money to buy food. I am a dairy and poultry farmer and I use the transfers to service the loan where I pay back KES 2500 every month. The money my husband gets is channelled towards food items and other basic commodities.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am hoping to take another loan to construct a chicken coup so that my chicken do not have to stray into other people's shambas. Right now, they are free range and they go destroying other people's crops bringing enmity amongst our neighbours. I will also be in a position to plant vegetables in my farm and make extra cash from the sale of the vegetables. Right now, I cannot plant vegetables and have chicken at the same time because the chicken are free range and they destroy the vegetables. This will also foster good relationship with neighbours.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
You offer us good customer service whenever we call you. The fact that we get to decide how to spend the money takes the day as well. If the program was to be taken to another village, replicate it as it is here.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I took a loan KES 20000 at the beginning of the year in order to pay school fees for my son who is now in form four. I did this so that he could concentrate in school as it has been a year where the syllabus was covered in a very short time as compared to other previous years. I therefore use the transfers to pay back the loan where I pay KES 2500 every month and I use the remainder to buy sugar. I am glad that because of GiveDirectly has helped me keep my son in school full time.
