How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different because I now have a decent house to live in with my family. Were it not for this financial help from GiveDirectly, then I would still be in my old, small and grass thatched house. The money has also enabled me to pay for my sisters medical bills and surgery after she was diagnosed with an a serious illness. This had made her studies to be discontinued. I am happy that she is now doing well and comfortably in school having received specialized treatment through this money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has done well in supporting us who were needy and helping us achieve our financial goals. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly doesn't do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
As farmer it's been my desire to buy some tools that would aid me in my farming. Thus when I received my second transfer, I purchased a pair of oxen for the purpose of helping me in ploughing my farm on time. In addition, my sister had been suffering from an illness that made her unable to continue with her studies. Thus I spent a portion to seek for a specialized medical attention from where a surgery was done and she has now resumed her studies. I also did some shopping for my children on clothing and also bought foodstuffs for them as well as paying for some household expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The house which I was previously living in was not spacious enough to accommodate my family. It is through the GiveDirectly money that I was able to buy enough materials to set up a new spacious house and the small old house will be my store and kitchen. Getting a new house is the biggest achievement for I never thought of building at all for it was costly.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I've been anxiously waiting for the notification from GiveDirectly and I was constantly going through my messages until I bumped into one that morning. As I read through, I confirmed that it was from GiveDirectly and finally my transfer had been sent. I was very happy and smiled all the way.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
The house that I was previously living in was not spacious enough as the store, kitchen and living room were all under one roof. Thus on receiving the transfer, I spent part of it to buy iron sheets and enough materials to construct a new spacious house that would comfortably accommodate my family. The old one serves as a kitchen and a store. My husband is also operating a small restaurant in town and he was running short in supply of the stock of goods to run it,thus a percentage of the transfer was spent on purchasing enough stock for the restaurant, for it is the only source that we get income from, boosting it by increasing stock will increase income for us. On the remaining amount, I bought a new wooden bed for us, since the one were using was old and worn out.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy iron sheets and timber to build a spacious house for my family. I will also pay school fees for my children and purchase livestock for rearing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon after taking lunch. My children and I normally rest under a shade and share stories that makes us to laugh a lot.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I have faced was inability to have a stable source of income to enable me to provide for my family's needs while we were staying in Mombasa. As a result, my husband and I were forced to relocate back to the village when we could not even afford to pay rent nor even afford to provide food consistently for our children.
