How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I had no hopes of living in a decent house because I had no money to buy the required resource. My prev ius house was in a pathetic state and almost falling. I am now happy because I am living in a nice house together with my family. Secondly, I now have a complete pair of oxen and an ox plough. previously I was owning one ox whereby I had to hire the other one from a friend which was costly. For now, I will be saving the money that I have been using in hiring the other ox for some other needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well in almost everything in my village. First by choosing to come to my village was the best decision. This I because most of u could not afford to fulfill our family's basic needs like shelter and food. Secondly, we were given the opportunity to choose what to buy using transfers. I do not see any sector GD failed us.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent apt of my second transfer on buying an ox worthy of Kes 19000. I then bought a solar panel ar KES 20000. This was to replace the candles that I have been using for the past years, and that was expensive sometimes I could not afford it. I also spent 8800 to buy an ox plough that will help in plough my farm with a pair of oxen., because I have been hiring from friends which were expensive. I then paid school fees for my children at 4000. The remaining amount of money, I bought some enough foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I feel so proud now that I am sleeping under a well plastered semi-permanent iron-roofed house. It has been my desire to construct one but due to the financial difficulties, I could not afford it. The coming of GD in my life has transformed everything in my life and I still can't believe this. Initially, I used to sleep under a small hut with some old grass roofings, which was ever leaking whenever it could rain. We used to seek some shelter from my relatives and it reached a time, we opted to stay in the hut because it brought some conflict with my relatives. it was so hectic. I am so grateful now and I am a happy parent as well because we no longer have to worry about the rains and also the security.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was awakened by loud vibration from my mobile, I was a bit shocked. It was so unusual for someone to send e a message at such an hour. But again I decided to check, who might have sent the message. Upon checking, I realized it was an mpesa message from GD. I was overwhelmed with joy and I was so sure my dreams are now achievable.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as some pieces of iron sheets, nails, building poles, and some timber. This was purposely for the renovation of my house because the previous one was a grass-thatched hut and it was leaking during the winter seasons. I then paid the mason his labor fee. I also cleared school fees for my children and bought them some new school uniforms because their previous ones were old and torn. I had to clear the whole fee balance to avoid the distraction since they have been sent home to collect school fees every now and then. The remaining amount of money I bought some enough foodstuffs for my family and some other household items that I was lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to replace my old thatched roof with an iron roof at a cost of 15000 shillings inclusive of labor. I will also install a solar panel worth 33000 shillings to enable my children study at night and improve security too. With the remaining balance, I will purchase 5 goats at 3000 shillings each and food such as maize for my household that can sustain us till next month when we can harvest our crops.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest time is in the evening when I go to the farm to fetch vegetables for supper preparation. Few months ago, it was so dry and vegetables were hard to come by forcing us to buy which is expensive for us.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Charcoal burning is our main source of income. Because it is a very tedious job, I can only manage to make 2 sacks every week which I sell at 400 shillings each to support my family of 12 people. Between buying food and paying school fees for my 6 children in school, am always left with nothing even to save for rainy days. We have thus had to endure living in an old dilapidated house that leaks terribly with no source of lighting for the night except the fire we use to cook.
