How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Our new goal is to complete the construction of our house and to buy more gutters for collecting rainwater. We also have a goal of buying furniture for our house. We had put some effort before building the house, but we did not manage to complete it. There are a few things that still need to be done. We have, however, moved into it. We had managed to buy some gutters and a water tank with the second transfer but the gutters were not enough. We would like to buy more so that we can collect enough rainwater. We also want to buy the furniture because we do not have them. We are still a young family and we have not managed to buy them. To achieve the said goals, we plan to first finish repaying the loan that we took so that we can concentrate on the developments.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well because they changed the lives of the people in the community for the better. Most of the people in my area had round grass-thatched houses but most of them were able to build new houses that are roofed with iron sheets when they got the transfers from GiveDirectly. Others were able to pay school fees for their children and some bought livestock that they did not have. Their living standards have hence been upgraded. I do not see anything wrong with the way they do their work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the second transfer on buying a water tank and some gutters. We bought the tank at KES 28000. We bought them so that we can be able to collect clean rainwater for our household use. We usually experience a prolonged dry season in our area and hence getting water is usually quite a challenge. The river is too far and we usually buy water, especially when the dry season persists. We were not able to buy the tank before because we did not have the money to do so. I have trained as a secondary school teacher but I have not gotten a job. My husband on the other end is a soldier. We had taken a loan for constructing the house and we have not finished repaying it. So the money from GiveDirectly helped us in accomplishing the plans that we had left pending for a while. We are glad that it has rained a bit and hence we have water for our use. We hence no longer incur a lot of costs buying it. With the remaining amount of money, we used it in buying foodstuffs. Thank you so much for the support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving a notification message that informed me of the receipt of my first transfer brought forth the greatest joy in my family. I was alone at home that morning but the great joy could not allow me to stay indoors but had to contact other neighboring households to confirm whether they had received the same news. I also called my husband who had been away to his workplace and he was equally excited as we had great goals that we needed to initiate after receiving the transfer. Our priority was to complete the construction that we had been doing at home and had to send some amount from the transfer to my husband so that he could purchase some of the construction materials that we were still missing on his way home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the transfer is the great boost on the construction work. We are all glad in the household that the interior part of our new house is now complete, and currently looking forward to sourcing other finances that will help us in applying pains and plastering of the outside walls. Thanks to GiveDirectly for the generous support that has made our dream of moving into the new house a reality.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Our construction of a two-bedroom house that we started six months ago had been running smoothly but slowly since we had been looking for the finances to use bit by bit in obtaining materials. Receiving this transfer was a boost on the construction work as we spent KES41000 on obtaining paints, several bags of cement, and settling the labor charges. We had been hoping to see the construction complete, and even though we used a huge portion from the transfer on furthering the construction, we still need more since the two-bedroom is turning out to be bigger than we thought. I also spent KES9000 on obtaining new clothing for my husband, my two children, and also mine as everyone needed at least a new pair. With the remaining KES4000, I purchased household goods that included foodstuff and other kitchenware that was still missing. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the great support that has boosted our construction work and also enabled us to add some food to our baskets.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am an unemployed mother of two who graduated from Maasai Mara University in 2019 with a degree in Education English literature. I currently take care of my kids as well as do farming at home. My husband works as a Kenya Defence officer in Lanet Barracks. He used his savings to build this house up to the level it is now. Due to limited resources and several needs in the family, we were unable to complete the construction of this house. These transfers will enable us to complete the construction and the furnishings of this house. We need approximately KES 60000 for Cement, concrete, paints, glasses, and labor expense.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a mother of two young girls one aged 2 and the other 5 months old I engaged in household chores such as cleaning and cooking. When my baby sleeps I get a chance to feed and water the flock. I get to relax, play around with my kids or watch the television in the afternoon after taking lunch. The afternoon is therefore the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of water is the biggest hardship we face. This area is prone to long periods of drought. Clean water is essential for the survival of livestock and human beings. I am a dairy farmer with cows and goats. I spent approximately KES 450 per day on the water for household use and for livestock to drink. This money should have been spent on other activities and developments in the household in case we had access to adequate rainfall and tap water.
