How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life since I started receiving these transfers is that my business is now stable. Without the transfers, I believe the business would have collapsed by now. This is because I used to take business resources for my personal needs without investing more in the business. The stock reduced hence affecting the business income. As soon as I started getting my transfers, I started using the major part of my monthly transfers in boosting the business by adding more stock to the business on a monthly basis. Right now, the business is flourishing because of the transfers. The stress I used to have of losing the business is no more.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My goal for the transfers is to boost my foodstuff business by adding more stock. The business has been my main source of income before the transfers and I have the chance to make it better with the transfers. The business will help me after I am done with the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on paying for medical expenses for my mother who had pressure was admitted. She had been admitted for three weeks and had to add to my savings to help raise money for the whole hospital bill. The transfers were very helpful at such times.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before I started receiving these transfers, I had no stable source of income as I only depended on casual domestic jobs that were rarely available and paid very little as well. I had no option but to live with my grandmother because I could not manage to properly provide for myself. This was not such a bad thing but it was very embarrassing considering that I have two children. I also had no privacy because we had to share rooms. After I started receiving the transfers, I opened up a grocery business which now pays me much better than the domestic jobs I did before. I have managed to rent my own house just close to where my grandmother lives so that I can have my privacy. The business has also brought a very big difference in my life because it has given me financial independence as I no longer have to borrow from my relatives as I did before.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I have a grocery business which is currently my main source of income after I quit the previous domestic jobs I did before I started receiving these transfers. Now that the schools have closed and most people are at home, I feel that this may be the best time to start another business in french-fries. I never had this idea before, but after running the grocery business for some time now, I have an idea of where to get potatoes at a very good price which can give good profits.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am planning to expand my current grocery business by branching into french fries business. I have done my assessment and knows that I will not need much capital to set this up. This month's transfers was however not enough to set it up, so I decided to save it in a mobile savings platform to increase my loan limit so that I can borrow a decent amount towards the end of the month and set up the business.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I started running a small scale business which generates income that is enough to feed me and my family very comfortably. In most cases, I am always certain that my rent will always come from Give direct or my business profits, whichever comes first. The level of stress has also gone down because I am able to fend for myself through the business, so I do not have to rely on financial help from either my mother or my grandmother.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I want to save as much as I can within the coming months so that I can one day get a place of my own and build my own house even if it means going to build the house in the rural areas. I am currently tired of paying rent in Mathare because I am only making my landlord richer and leaving myself with little to spend and save for the future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the money to pay school fees for my brother who had been sent away from school due to fees balances yet my mother had no money at that time. As an elder sister, I had to chip in and ensure that the young boy goes back to school in good time in order to resume his studies without wasting time at home. Were it not for the transfers I think we would have stayed back here at home with my bro until such a time when I will have some cash.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goals now that I have started receiving the money is to start my business and expand it after some time. This will help me earn more income on a weekly basis if not on a daily basis since all days can never be the same in business. I will use my income to cater for my needs and to support my siblings. With this, my life will never be the same again even after the GD program is over.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is that I have started saving some money towards the fulfilment of my dream unlike before. This has made me have a peace of mind since I now believe that I will be owning a business in the next two months.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My dream has always been to own a business. When GiveDirectly came for enrollment, I took it as an opportunity to actualize my dream. When I started receiving my transfers, I decided to start saving since I was among the people who would receive the transfers on a monthly basis and it would not be possible to achieve this as the amount was little to what I need. Due to this, I saved my most recent transfers in the bank after receiving it so that I can use them to actualize my dream.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I was so excited the moment I started receiving my money. At first, I could not imagine that I would receive such a huge amount of money for free but I am now glad that I am receiving them and I am very grateful to God for making such a miracle to happen in my life.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I will spend my transfers to expand my Charcoal business. I sell Charcoal in Mathare 4A, just outside where my grandmother lives. I will expand this business by adding more stock to my business. Secondly, I will spend my transfers to assist my grandmother and my younger brother who is yet to join college. I will assist my brother with some school fees, and my grandmother with her daily needs such as meals. Finally, I will save the remaining of my transfers.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is failing to achieve my ambitions. This could be from negative peer influence such as joining bad groups or gangs that can influence my thoughts negatively. This could result in a situation where I end up losing focus and direction in life, which will eventually lead to failure to achieve my ambitions. My second concern is getting involved in gang violence or crime. I have seen my peers whom I schooled with, lose their lives at a young age because of getting themselves involved in crime and drug abuse. Finally, my other concern is failure to meet my daily needs. This can lead to a state of desperation where I would be forced to engage in social ills such as prostitution. I have seen my peers lead a life of prostitution just to sustain themselves. One can easily contract diseases or end up with unwanted pregnancies.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambitions are to own two large clothes boutique; one in my neighborhood in Mathare 4A village, and one in the Central Business District. I also hope to buy a piece of land and build a house in the outskirts of Nairobi County, at a place like Thika.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
My usual day begins at 7:00 am when I wake up to prepare breakfast for my grandmother and my 5 cousins, whom we both reside in my grandmother's house. I then proceed to do my assigned house chores before heading to my shop, where I sell charcoal. This is usually around 8:00am or 9:00am. I sell my charcoal up to around 11:00PM in the night. I then close my shop and head back to the house for some supper. I reconcile my finances for the day, and then I go to bed. In my free time, I enjoy to relax with my cousins in the house.
