How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am not free to be here with my grandchildren because I left my matrimonial house and returned to my parent's home. As a result, I intend to build a house on the land I purchased using GiveDirectly funds. If all goes as planned, I hope to be in my own home before the end of the year 2023. This is doable provided I maintain my savings discipline from my casual labor.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is an organization that came to empower us and make us feel like the rest of humanity. This is particularly evident in how the transfer allowed me to acquire the property on which I intend to build a home. After my spouse passed away and I had to leave the place where I was married owing to family-related issues, I now reside at my parent's house with my grandchildren. Honestly, I have never noticed any issues with GiveDirectly, and I participate in the organization's initiatives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After my husband's passing, family disputes over land succession forced me to leave my marital home. I moved to my biological parents since I had no other choice, along with my four grandkids who had been left behind by their father because he did not agree with my daughter. I chose to save $300 on the first transfer to buy my plot of land since I was confident I would obtain the second transfer. Upon receiving the second transfer, I took $500 and combined it with the money I had already saved to make $800, and I used that money to purchase a two-acre plot of property. After reaching an agreement, the actual cost came to $900, therefore I paid almost 90% of the needed sum. Building a home is the purpose of purchasing the property. As a result, my four grandchildren, who are wholly dependent on me, will have a place to call home.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was two days passed the date I was assured of receiving the money by one of the GiveDirectly officials who called me. I started to become curious since some people had received their transfers. I told my helper to check my account balance if I had also received the money or not. The aim was to call the GiveDirectly hotline number for clarification if the money could not be seen in my account. When the helper confirmed, he informed me that the money had been in my account for the past two days. I jumped up and down in happiness for receiving the promised transfer knowing that I would handle several areas that have been challenging me.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, two issues were eating me up and I had no means to tackle them. Lack of confidence at my parents-in-law's home after the death of my husband, and hunger since I was left with seven children to take care of yet I had no defined source of income. Currently, my life has taken a different positive angle since I received the first transfer. I have some prospects of starting a home soon after getting a piece of land which I bought using the first transfer. Again the issue of hunger has been resolved since I used some of the transfer to buy foodstuff for my family who is now accessing food unlike before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been leaving an uneasy life for the past two years since my husband died. By the time he died, we were living on their family piece of land together with his parents. After his death, I lost confidence since I had no shoulder to lean on in case I undergo some challenges. Living with my parents-in-law in the absence of my husband has been the hardest part of my life. I desired to buy a piece of land to start my home together with my seven children but money was the biggest challenge. I only relied on charcoal making since I was just a housewife. This business could not sustain my family and in a couple of days, we went without food. Upon getting the first transfer, I bought a 1.25-acre piece of land for $400. I was overjoyed since my long-time desire had come to pass. Thereafter, I used the remaining amount of money to buy food for my family. I also took a break from the tiring charcoal-making job and since then we have not missed a meal. I am grateful because soon I will be having my home and this is courtesy of GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widow living with my five children. My husband died five years ago and my piece of land was taken by my husband's family. I have been living as a squatter for five years now. I can not do any development projects now. I will use KES 100000 to buy one acre of land for the family. This will restore my reputation in the community. I will also use KES 10000 to buy food for the family. I am happy that Givedirectly money with shed me tears that I have been in for five years now.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My last born did certificate in education and has been looking for a job but in vain. In January 2022 she got a job in one of the schools in Mombasa county. She can now provide food for the family. My daughter's job brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
As a widow, I depend on agriculture for food. It is two years now without receiving rains in our village. This has caused famine and drought. My family takes one meal per day now. Lack of food is the current challenge I am facing in my life.
