How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a plan to expand my egg business to a larger scale, aiming to achieve this goal before the end of the year. Additionally, I intend to venture into the vegetable business at a later stage. The idea is to purchase vegetables from local farms or suppliers and distribute them throughout the market.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has demonstrated an exceptional quality that sets their program apart: they have consistently upheld their commitment without accepting any favors from recipients that could raise doubts about their integrity. Furthermore, we express a desire for the organization to extend the duration of the program. This would allow the small strides we have made with the transfers to gather momentum and bring about positive transformations in our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my most recent transfers, I made several choices to improve our living conditions and plan for the future. With $60, I decided to stock up on food for our family of four, as it can be overwhelming to provide daily meals. Additionally, I allocated $10 to purchase new clothes for myself, as my current wardrobe consists of worn-out and outdated items. Refreshing my attire would help boost my confidence. Realizing that these transfers would be the last from Give Directly, I carefully considered long-term investments. I decided to invest approximately $100 in acquiring goats, as they would serve as a family investment to meet our future needs during challenging times. Given my familiarity with raising chickens and their low maintenance requirements, I was thrilled to purchase a number of them for $150. This allowed us to establish a small-scale egg business, tapping into the market demand.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As I look forward to the coming year, my eyes are set on a new ambition: to become an expert in goat rearing. With this, I hope to increase my profits and have a reliable source of income. To make this dream a reality, I plan on using my second transfer to invest in more goats. I am confident that with the right care and attention, my goats will multiply and lead to a fruitful business. Reflecting on my past achievements, I am filled with happiness and gratitude. I am proud of what I have accomplished so far, but I know that there is always room for growth and improvement. With determination and hard work, I am confident that I will achieve my goal of becoming a successful goat farmer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly's operations were not only seamless but also enlightening. Their officers did an excellent job of introducing the program to us during the sensitization meetings, ensuring that we understood everything we needed to know. They were patient and allowed us ample time to ask questions and express our opinions. What impressed me the most was the respect they accorded us; it made us feel valued and appreciated as beneficiaries.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Thanks to GiveDirectly, I was able to make my lifelong dream of owning goats come true. Financial struggles made it impossible before, as my husband only earns a casual income and I look after my brother's goats. With the transfer I received, I used $150 to purchase three goats and $100 to build a goat pen. I also contributed $30 to my children's school fees, with the remaining funds going toward food. Amazingly, my dream became a reality in such a short time, and I couldn't be happier.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 4:00 p.m., I received a Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I could not doubt the source because I was not expecting any money other than the GiveDirectly transfer promised during enrollment, even though the organization's name was not shown in the Mpesa message. I was alone because my two children, who are in boarding school, had not yet returned home. I had no one to tell the news to, but I was overjoyed and grateful for the receipt that I had been anticipating since enrolling in the program.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The addition of seven chickens to my previous three has made the biggest difference in my daily life. Even though some are still young, I am grateful that I can always collect at least 5 eggs per day to use for household purchases. The project is simple to manage, and because it is a free-range system, I don't have to spend much money on it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the first transfer, I had a lot of aligned that I wieshed to accomplish, but first I had to make sure I bought enough food for my family of three. Previously, I depended on casual labor, which was uncertain due to its inconsistency. As a result, I spent $52 on food to last us until Christmas Eve, which we celebrated with my children. I also spent $35 on proving my sleeping condition by purchasing a new mattress. I also spent $25 on 7 chickens, which I am now raising for both eggs and meat. I am pleased that, even though they are still young, I rarely go without at least five eggs per day, which is enough to buy some household goods. In addition, I spent $13 on a dress and a pair of shoes, $10 on school supplies for my child, and the remaining $35 on new utensils. I am grateful for GiveDirectly's generous support and hope to accomplish much once the second transfer arrives.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Ten years ago, I separated with my husband and I left behind two children. I came back home and I have been living in a house that my brother gave me in the meantime before I can buy land. My ambition is to own a home one day but this has not be possible as I rely on casual jobs which earn me $2 a day. This amount is only enough to purchase food and other emergencies like medication. When I get the transfers I will use it to buy an eight-acre piece of land and build a two-roomed house. I am excited that after all this long wait, Give directly transfers will enable me to have a home. With it I can comfortably do poultry farming from which I will have a stable source of income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I want to be a poultry farmer and though I do not have a stable source of income, I managed to save up $6 in three months that I used to purchase two chickens. I am happy because this added to the one I have and is now laying eggs and will multiply in months to come. In due course, I will earn money which I can use to meet my basic needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the greatest challenge because I live in a semi-arid area. It has been two years since I last had a good harvest from our farms. I must work to get money to purchase equally expensive food. I take two meals a day when I have money otherwise it is most once. This becomes a problem and it deteriorates my health as I lack enough nutritional food.
