What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Unfortunately last month my house collapsed due to the very string winds and since then my family and I have been left homeless and my wife, kids and I have been sleeping outside our home since we have nowhere else to go. That is why when I received the money I went ahead to buy iron sheets and timber and in turn using all the transfers I had which was KES 3,000. I am yet to even reach halfway when it comes to renovating my house, but I am just glad that I could begin the process of buying the materials I need in order for the construction to begin.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Food was the biggest issue, on receiving my first transfer which was 1200, I used all of it to get maize flour. I was also very focused on getting my debts owed to my kids schools reduced. So from my second transfer I paid 600 for my child in class 7 and my two children in class 8 I paid 800 and 900. I had a standing debt of 1600 for my class seven child and 2200 for my class eight children. So on my third transfer I reduced my debt for my class kids in class eight by 1000 each again and I was left with a outstanding debt of 300 and 200 shillings. I was able to clear up the class sevend fee debt. I am now much less stressed about the fee debts as they have been significantly reduced and I hope to clear the debts with the next transfer. For my second transfer I was able to get two hens which I have added to my animal farm as I am animal farmer.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The option of using the money according to our own needs is what Give directly does well. Something that I would like for Give directly to change is the amount of money that they are sending us, the money is not enough. If they could increase it a little so that we can plan different things to be done at the same time it would be enough.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With this money, I was able to buy three chickens worth KES.900. Since I wanted to start being financially independent, I thought that the chickens would be able to multiply and I would sell them when in need. I also used KES.300 to buy food for the chickens as there is a drought the chickens can not roam free. The rest of the money, KES.1800 was used to pay for food for my family. I decided to buy dried foods like maize meals which are a staple in my home.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Drought has ravaged our land for so long. There is no water for both human and animal consumption. We are obligated to move our animals to a distance of almost 20 kilometers in search of water and pasture. Last year, I decided to join hands with my sons to manually dig a water pan that will conserve enough water for our animals. This has never been realized due to lack of machinery. I plan to use the transfers to hire a tractor to help me dig the water pan for my animals.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the challenges I go through with my livestock, I am happy that I get 2 liters of milk every day from my cows. This helps my grandchildren to drink milk tea.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been a livestock farmer for a long time. I rear cattle in a small scale. In 2016, drought-ravaged our region. There were no pasture, neither water for our animals. As a result, I lost 23 cattle to hunger. It was a very big loss, bearing in mind that I had not insured them. Seeing how my cattle that I had struggle to rear die mercilessly is an ordeal I do not want to remember.
