How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal this year was to build a temporary shop on a piece of land that I bought in the nearby market and start selling green groceries. My husband promised to save some money towards building and starting the business and I am so hopeful that I am going to achieve my dream. Achieving this means that I am going to help him with responsibilities such as paying school fees for our children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is changing lives of many less fortunate people in the society in so many ways. People have been able to build houses, pay school fees for their children, start business and many more. Thank you for your continued support to the word's most poorest.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Ever since I was married to my husband who is a police, I have been a housewife. My long life desire has been to open a business and become financially independent. Since my husband doesn't earn much and he's the only breadwinner to our family of seven, he has not been able to give me the capital to start a business. When I received my first transfer, I bought a piece of land in the nearby market that I am planning to build a temporary shop but because I didn't manage to pay all the amount, I spend $200 of my second transfer to pay the balance. I also spend $200 of my second transfer to pay school fees for two of my children and spend the balance to buy food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 4 pm when I left my phone at home for the farm to plant some maize. Upon returning home it was around 6.30 pm. No sooner had I reached home than I heard a message tone from my from in the house. I went straight to see what information had been sent only to find that the GiveDirectly first transfer had just been deposited into my account. I was filled with joy for receiving the money knowing that my plans were going to kick off well.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, as a family, we relied on my husband's salary which could not cater to all the needs. I am very grateful for GiveDirectly because through the transfer, I have been able to relieve my husband from heavy duties that were all dependent on his monthly salary. The water scarcity issue was a big bother since I had to travel a long distance to source water but now I am glad I have water at my home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the first agenda that I had was school fees followed by water scarcity. Based on that, I paid KES 14000.00 school fees and fee arrears which they had accrued since I had no money to pay and my four children were out of school for the same. When I paid, they went back to school and they will not be sent out till the third term because I completed the first and second term fees. For so long we have been moving long distances in search of fresh water. Therefore, I opted to apply for a water meter and do all the required plumbing work for the water to be connected to my home. The meter cost was KES 5100.00, the pipes and other plumbing materials cost KES 10000.00 and the plumber's cost was KES 2500.00. For the remaining amount, I opted to save the remaining amount only to use some to buy some food and some clothes for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have desired to invest in livestock farming, especially goats because it is the only I save my money and earn a profit after I sell them when they multiply. Another advantage of goat farming is that goats survive better in drought situations compared to cows. I, therefore, intend to start with 10 goats which will cost KES 30,000. I further use KES 40000 to extend my house with two rooms because the current house I reside in is small (one roomed house) and is not spacious enough to accommodate my family of 5 children. The remaining amount will be invested in my children's educational needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My dream of investing come true in the month of January. My spouse gave me KES 10000 and I used this amount to buy one cow. This really brought joy to my life owning a cow of my own.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Little income compared to my needs is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. I am a housewife and my spouse is a police officer. We have been supporting other relatives, especially in their education. I have five children of my own who are also in school. Providing food for the family has been a problem for me since a lot of money goes into paying for school fees.
