How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I wish to open a business which includes selling vegetables and new clothes in my village. I feel that this is the most lucrative business which is on as well on high demand. After conducting my research I discovered that there are countable shops which deal with such commodities. Therefore I am certain that once I will get the empowerment, my life will change in a great way and I will be in a position to support my spouse who has been the family breadwinner for years.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well by ensuring that they fulfilled their promises timely. Also, each household received the same amount of money as agreed. Additionally, no one was left out provided they were the residents of the village they were working with. I, therefore, can't point out anything that needs to be changed for now.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $190 of my second transfer on buying cement, sand, and gravel. I had intended to renovate my house by plastering the walls since they had cracks and cementing the muddy floor. It was so frustrating especially during the winter seasons because my children and I could always be attacked by cold-related illnesses which would in other ways make us spend cash to seek medication. I now feel happier and relieved because this has finally come to an end and my children are now healthier. Moreover, the fact that my house looks decent has restored my dignity and I can now confidently host visitors without feeling embarrassed. Later on, I paid fees for my three children who are in boarding primary schools. Their exams were fast approaching and I was always worried that they might end up not sitting for them since they had not cleared the arrears. For now, I am grateful because I am certain that they will finally be able to do the exams and they will be transitioned to the next grade. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my five family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6.30 pm while I was on my way home after buying maize flour from a local shop in my village when I received a message on my phone. I checked to confirm what kind of a message it was, and I found out it was the first transfer from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with happiness for receiving the money which we were promised. I increased the pace home and finally, I opted to run to inform my husband of the same.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that is vivid in my home is my house. Initially, the house was vet rough, unpleasing since it was sandy inside. As of now, my house is shining after the plastering and the sand is no more since I did cement flooring. This has improved hygiene because my children were being invaded by jiggers due to the sandy house but of now things are well. The children are happy and comfortable.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My long-time desire was to get fresh water at my home and this could be achieved by fixing a water tap. Therefore upon withdrawing the money, I used KES 12100.00 to finalize the process which I had already started. I applied for the water from the Kilifi Water and Sewage Company (KIWASCO). As of now, I have some water at my home. I took this step because as a family we have been yearning for freshwater since we get it at a distance from where we reside. Thereafter, I saw it prudent to furnish my house by doing some plastering and flooring. I bought 15 bags of cement for KES 11250.00. The mason's labor charge was KES 15000.00. For the remaining amount, I opted to save it to upkeep the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Water is life and hear i can not do without five jericans of 20litres in a day. I normally get clean water 5km away from here, a distance that it's not easy considering that i have other duties to tackle. With my first transfer, i plan to use 25000KES to connect water here because there is new water piping project that was started last year and it is 1km approximately from here. By doing that, i will ease the burden of carrying water on the head for a long distance. If i sell the same water to my neighbors, i will earn something that will help me cater for other house bills. And that will definitely improve our living standard.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Four months ago, my husband brought five ducks and because i was very optimistic of starting a project at least to help my husband that came very in handy. They have now multiplied and everytime i get stuck in a problem, i sell one or two and sort the issue. That idea i must was very nice and i do appreciate and thank my husband for that.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband who is the second born of this family has been the only one working. The job is not that paying good salary and because all of us are depending on him, is a true definition of stressful life . Recently, my father-in-law was admitted in a hospital with a condition that has affected all of us both mentally and financially. He is still under treatment and all that lean on my husband. Because of all that, school fees for my children sometimes its hard to find and they have to miss classes and even more worse sometimes miss exams.
