How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer from GiveDirectly because we are currently residing in a relatively good geographical location with favorable climatic conditions that suits our farming practices. We used the funds on purchasing some parcel of land and shifted our residence to the new location. Hence, GiveDirectly is indeed a great helper that has enabled me to come out of the semiarid and relatively infertile land that we used to have.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in the fact that it offers unconditional cash transfer - that is, each beneficiary has the freedom to choose on how and what to spend the cash on. Still, I greatly like the approach of offering aid in the form of money rather than material items. Thus, I do not find anything that the organization is not doing well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent 50,000 KES of my second transfer on topping up funds that I used on purchasing some piece of land for our family. Besides, I used 2000 KES on purchasing a cloth for my husband. Finally, I used the remaining amount on buying household goods including food items and toiletries.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Life is hard! I have two children and we are a family of four. The small subsistence farming I do cannot sustain us. Receiving this money means a new chapter in my life. I have a high school certificate and the first priority now is to enroll for a course in college come January intake next year. I have a dream of becoming an accountant. This will open my life to many opportunities including securing a job or acquiring skills to set up a new business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening after having accomplished tasks I had planned for the day. This is also a time my children and I come together to have a meal.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In June 2014 after giving birth to our second born daughter, I separated with my husband for about 3 years on alleged account of infidelity. All these were falsification from my immediate neighbor. I left my matrimonial home and went back to my parents. I only came back in 2017 after truth emerged that all were sheer lies -my daughter had turned two years. This is the biggest hardship I have faced in my life because I was taken aback. Livestock, household items and other items I had invested in were sold and squandered. But I am hopeful that this transfer will make a difference.
