How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to add more materials to my tailoring business. With the stock that I have, I am focusing on uniforms which have given me huge returns hence I have been able to save and buy more items to purchase other materials.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well by giving unconditional cash transfers and giving everyone the freedom of how to spend it. The kind and patient officers made all the stages of enrollment easier and easily understandable. I do not have any complaints at all.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With KES 10,000 I was able to build an iron-roofed house. The one I had before was grass thatched and it was leaking during the rainy season. I appreciate that the new one is fully complete and we are enjoying cooking and the warmth of the kitchen. I also spent KES 6,000 on installing doors and windows in a house I had built with part of my first transfer. The house is fully complete and we have already moved in. With KES 20,000 I used in buying a tailoring machine since before I had been employed to knit sweaters in a different store. I am happy that I have my machine. I also spent KES 15,000 in paying a debt I had borrowed from my neighbor to clear some bills. I am happy to see all the improved changes in my home.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember vividly like yesterday. It was around 9:20 am in the morning when I heard a ringtone message from my phone. It was very cold ghat morning and I was still indoors. When I checked the message I could not believe my eyes. It was message confirming that I have received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I was so overwhelmed with joy because I have never received such amount of money before. I immediately inform my spouse and he felt happy. We plan on buying building materials to build a better house. I am so grateful for the support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have build a better house for my family. We used to live in a small grass thatched house which was leaking from inside. The house was so small and could not host all the family comfortably. I do small scale farming and my spouse do casual jobs in the village. The amount of money that we get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family including buying building materials to build a better house. My children were exposed to cold during the rainy season. The grass thatched house was almost falling apart. Whenever we had visitors there was no extra space to host them. This was so demoralizing because we could only host them outside or at neighbors house. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and the first thing was to buy building materials. Currently we have a spacious house which can host all my family members comfortably. Whenever I have visitors I no longer get worried. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard. I hope to work hard and ensure that my children get better life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent more than 400 dollars on buying building materials and build a better house for my family. We used to live in a small grass thatched house which was leaking from inside. We were being exposed to cold. The rest of the money I used it on food for the family because we didn't had enough in store during that time when I received the transfer, I also bought utensils and other household items that I didn't had. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I live in a small hut and my family is growing. I have therefore planned that I will build a bigger house when I receive my transfers so that my children can have a better home. Receiving this money is a blessing to me because it will also enable me to buy a sewing machine now that I have completed my course work.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning because I am thankful for the new day abd also I am happy that my children slept well through the night and that they are healthy despite the cold.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest worry at the moment is that my hut is leaking whenever it rains. We are forced to move from one spot to another on rainy seasons. Even though my husband is a casual laborer who helps build other people's houses, we have never had enough finances to build our own house. I am worried that my children will develop pneumonia as a result of the cold we experience at night especially on rainy seasons. I thank GiveDirectly because I know I will be able to build a better house once I receive my transfers.
