How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am so proud because my children are much healthier and happier. We sleep peacefully on comfortable mattresses. We also acquired livestock and a motorcycle which earns daily income for the family. Previously, we did not have any income generating activity.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well to send people unconditional cash transfers. On the otherhand, there is nothing wrong that GiveDirectly has done because the whole community is happy.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I purchased a piece of land worth UGX 1000000 and a bull worth UGX 600000. The remaining part of the cash transfer was spent on food.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life is that I have been able to hire enough farm land which I cultivated on. My crops are doing grate and I am optimistic of getting good harvest this season. Before I got the money, I had a small piece of land to farm which could not give me enough harvest.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer, I felt so happy. It got me at a time I needed it most because I did not have many basic need and with the most pressing being lack of food.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer for buying an ox, 3 mattresses, bed sheets, curtains, a bed, utensils, 2 jerrycans, a bicycle and food. I hired 4 acres of farm land.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money, the first thing I will do is to pay a loan that saw our piece of land taken as collateral. I would like to pay this loan so that we regain our land and we do agriculture on it. I will also buy oxen that will help in ploughing the fields. I have been hiring this bulls but now if I have my own, then I will be able to save what we have been using as a cost of hiring those services.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon because it is the time people come around my home and give me company. It is also the time we usually share the lunch meal as a family because at night some children sleep off.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of money to cater for the household's basic needs like education, medical care and proper feeding.
