What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Both my husband and I operates local kiosks where we have been selling food and groceries. Majorly, we have been selling food to students and the last two months has not been easy for us because schools had been closed to allow national examinations to take place. The little that we were earning from selling the groceries would afford us food and there was nothing left to save. Since were lucky to be both enrolled in the program, we were saving the whole amount towards paying school fees for our five children and I'm happy they were able to resume school smoothly when they opened this week. For the most recent transfer, I spend the whole amount to buy building poles as we are planning to add another room to our single room so that we can have privacy as parents and enough shared space for my family.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly does well by letting people decide on how to spend their money without y conditions. For the two times I have received the transfers, my life has already improved. I boosted my fast food business and since then I can save something daily.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a small fast food business and since it is the only source of income my family depends on, it is operating in small stock. In most cases, I could take the products on credit and pay later. When I received my transfer I spent KES 2000 to clear the debts I took from the shopkeeper to restock my business and currently, I can restock without borrowing. I am glad my business has improved and I can save some money, unlike the previous case. I also used KES 1500 to clear the school fees balance that my children owed the school so that they could not be sent back home. The remaining amount of KES 500, I spent on purchasing foodstuffs which we used to celebrate on Christmas day.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the money at 9 am. I was at my business place cooking food for my customers. I was not having any peace of mind at that moment. I was now and then thinking about the debt I was being owed. When I received the message I was happy and my mood completely changed. I remember I started ululating attracting the attention of the customers who were eating at that time. I was very happy. The energy I had thereafter was double the one that I had in the morning. Receiving the transfer motivated me.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Yes, the money has made a big difference in my life. I now have a business that I fully own. I am now fully motivated to go to my place of work. Unlike before. With the business, I can meet some of my daily needs and I am looking forward to even expand the business when I receive the next transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
They say when the going gets tough the tough get going. This will best suit how my life has been. I have gone through lots of challenges in the past from losing my job early this year due to the effects of the corona pandemic and also not being able to practice any type of farming with the only piece of land you have due to climatic conditions. With all these challenges I have not given up and I have always found a way to find something to eat for my family. Some weeks back I decided to start a small hotel business so that I could earn from something from it. I did not have money so I decided to buy the food to cook on credit. When I received the transfer I decided to go ahead and spend the whole amount in repaying the debt I owed the shopkeeper. I am now happy that everything I earn from the business fully belongs to me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My small food business has been suffering from a lack of money. At the moment, I can only manage to make tea and chapati. With funds from Give Directly, I believe I can expand it. I would like to add to my menu some beans, meat, rice, vegetables, and ugali. The first four transfers will be used to boost this menu. I intend to use the money as it comes.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Good health is such an underrated blessing. Even though life has its ups and downs, I am obsessively grateful for good health. The fact that my family and I do not spend sleepless nights at hospitals, or have family members who are always sick, I am very grateful.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband and I run groceries and food kiosks simultaneously. The proceeds from both businesses are not enough I feed on and send our children to school. We have fee arrears that. We cannot seem to figure a way of boosting our income so that we can at least live more comfortably. I feel so stuck as to what to do about our situation. I have been praying to God for a way out. Maybe Give Directly Is it?
