What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When my house collapsed, we moved to my first born's single room with my wife and three children. I have been putting all the efforts to build a two rooms house, as my son is usually forced to stay with his friends once school closes as he has nowhere to sleep once he come home. I operate a local green grocery store and the profit that I get averaging to KES 3000 per day wouldn't get me enough capital to build a house as I had other responsibilities. For the last six months that I have been receiving the transfers, I have been spending KES 1000 to buy food, KES 1000 to pay school fees and the balance to add more stock to my business. The business is now doing well and earning me some good income and this has given me a good opportunity to start building. So far, I have managed to raise the structure and I'm hopeful that I will manage to roof it in the next few months so that my family can move in to allow my son to come back home once school closes.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly is doing well in giving people unconditional cash without discrimination. So far I have seen a lot of improvements since I received the money. My children are all in school including my son who dropped out of school two years ago because I could not afford his school fee. Now he is back in school courtesy of Give Directly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a small business where I sell fresh vegetables, tomatoes, onions, and fruits. I had low stock since it is our main source of income. The moment when I received my transfers I used KES 3000 to add more stock and even introduced corn and beans. I am glad the sales have improved since I now have a variety of products. The KES 300 profit I make from it daily can now meet my family's needs. KES 1000 I paid for my two children's primary school fees to reduce the balance they had in school. A portion of the money I spent on some of the foodstuffs for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in church praying. The situation was becoming tough for me. I decided to go to church to pray so that God would open doors for me so that I could get money to boost my business. Immediately after finishing my prayers, I checked my phone and found that I had received the transfer. I was out of words and tears rolled down my cheeks due to the happiness I had inside me. I knelt again and thanked God. To me, this was a miracle
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Yes, there is a big difference at the moment, my business is currently doing well. From the business, I earn a living and I use the profit to cater to my daily needs. My Economic situation is different from what I had before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a business selling coconuts. For several weeks the business has not been very good due to the tough economic conditions. As a good businessman, I had thought of changing the product I was selling to the customers and venturing to something else. The major challenge I was facing in fully executing that plan was a lack of sufficient funds. When I received the transfer, I spent KSH 1500 to boost my business and decided to go sell vegetables instead of coconut. At the time when I had received the transfer my three children who are in school had been sent home from school due to school fees balances. I spent the remaining amount to collectively pay for the school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
In life, it is my prestigious to own a house, and not just any kind of house. A well-built one with proper roofing and firm structure. My previous house fell due to heavy rains and I was forced to build a temporary structure to avoid living in the cold. We sat down as a family with my wife and son and agreed that we will be contributing 1500 KES a month to the construction of a new house. I would like to see my family living in a comfortable, spacious house, where they will not have to worry about it falling.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I find joy at the end of every school term when my children bring home their report cards and they have done well. It motivates me to give my all at work to give them the best.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have five sons, four of whom are in school. Three years ago, my firstborn son who was in form two then stopped schooling. I could not continue paying his school fees. I do not want him to face the same hardships I have had to go through. I was able to reach class seven and could not go on due to financial challenges. I know how it feels to be uneducated and unemployed. It hurts every time he mentions he wants to continue with school and I cannot fulfill this wish.
