How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am currently employed in a small case enterprise. With the little money that I am paid I use in repairing. With the job that I am doing currently I save part of it towards start up of this business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly did well by giving us unconditional cash transfers and also giving us the freedom to choose what to spend on. I am grateful to Givedirectly for the great support that everyone received in my village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my second transfer I spent KES 30,000 in paying my fees. I had started a CPA course but it was cut short after I experienced financial constraints. I am happy that I resumed and I am almost finishing stage three and through that, I also got a job in which from my earnings I am paying my bills. I also spent KES 15,000 on buying sheep. The sheep can easily reproduce and multiply hence can selttthem them hem them l when I have an emergency. With the remaining part of my transfer, I used it in buying food for my family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On receiving the transfer, I was so excited that the enrollment we did weeks ago was finally bearing fruits. It came when I was a little bit far away from my phone. At that moment I was in my mother's house who on getting the message notification, she was fast to check and had to confirm with me. Since I had no phone, I run back home, picked mine that had the same news. To me, this meant quite a lot as I had been praying hard for a breakthrough that can settle my debts and take me back to school. This was that moment I had been praying for and had to really thank God for answering it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the joy of getting back to school after being locked out of school for lack of school fees for more than a year. Being a single mother with one kid has been a great challenge raising my school fees. Casual jobs have been hard to find, and the only hope I had been having was finding a sponsor that never happened until GiveDirectly came in. Taking Certified Public Accounting sections 3 and 4 at the same time is quite a challenge but I have devoted myself to give it all now that I have paid all the school fees for the semester. I am grateful to GiveDrectly for the great support that I am now enjoying.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a single mother of one, the outbreak of the pandemic destabilized not only the sources of income I depended on but also forced me to halt my Certified Public Accounting course I was taking with no hope of resuming later. At first, it was because of the school's closure to combat the pandemic but on reopening, I was not able to raise the required school fees. This has kept me home for more than a year now. With my first transfer at hand, I have decided to simultaneously take two sections for a total cost of $400. Over the period I had been home I had also accumulated a debt of $50 in the nearby shop that I managed to clear. With the remaining $90, I obtained construction materials which included iron sheets, nails, and also chain-link with the plan to construct a chicken coop and venture into poultry farming as an extra source of income.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I completed my undergraduate studies in 2018.Since then,I have not had any sort of formal employment except for short contracts that are unreliable.I have seen how difficult it can be to cope with an unreliable source of income and have always wished that I could venture into poultry farming. This is a business that does not require alot of capital and there is a high likelihood of returns.I intend to build a poultry unit for Sh 10000 and buy 30 layers at Sh 15000 for a start. With this,I can be sure to be cushioned in the event that I do not get a job soon.I also intend to complete my Accountancy Certification course which will cost me approximately Sh 50,000.This will increase my chances of getting employment hence securing a better future
What is the happiest part of your day?
On a typical day,I spend most of my day in the farm.Right now,I have planted beans.I therefore spend time weeding and applying pesticides on the crops until afternoon when I come back home.Am mostly free in the afternoon where I take time to look at job advertisements and make applications. This time makes me happy because aside from getting some rest, there is hope that with the many applications I make each day, one will land me a job soon
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was employed on temporary basis for a good part of last year. With the Sh 25000 that I earned monthly,I would set aside some amount to pay for my Accountancy courses popularly known as CPA.I had high hopes of completing this course until the pandemic struck. My employer had to restrategize and this included shutting down the business until a surer time.I lost my job and had to move back to the village. The biggest hardship I have faced is therefore losing the job with whose income I was paying for my studies.Am left to start over again.
