How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, I have a new goal to start a small business that will support my family alongside my daughters’ income. This will ensure that our basic needs are met comfortably without straining. Opening a cereal shop will come in handy and attract more customers who buy maize, beans, and millet for their families.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We welcomed GiveDirectly into the village with great happiness and can attest that our expectations of their delivery did not disappoint. I believe everyone concurs with a great job done in every household with no bias or discrimination. I have no complaints since the monetary support I received met most of the family needs I had planned.

I am a father to four lovely children and it’s always every parent’s dream to see their children doing well in life because this brings so much happiness to them. When I received my second transfer, I bought a sewing machine worth $180 for one of my children who had just graduated from her tailoring course. This made it possible for her to practice and earn from what she had learned in school. She has been supporting my wife and I with our basic needs at home since neither of us is working. Another one of my children was due to report for her secondary education and needed some preparations, thus we did shopping worth $100. Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning and I was at the hospital when I received the text message confirming that I have received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so grateful and I still up to date because I just used to hear about GiveDirectly and its good deeds, from other people. Therefore, I was so grateful because it helped me to address the challenges that I had been facing, especially getting my cow back that had been withheld by someone I owed some money and was never giving me peace.

The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I am so grateful I was able to get the sewing machine that will be earning us some regular income. I was also able to continue with my medication using part of the transfer I received, therefore, I am so grateful.

I spent most of the transfer which was KES 18000 on buying a sewing machine that will be operated by my daughter because I thought it wise to get this machine instead of spending the money on any other desirable thing and end up finishing it. This machine will be a regular source of income to both my daughter and myself, which will help us meet our personal needs as well as our family's.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means continued education for my children. I will achieve this by spending KES 40,000 to start a shop so that I have an income generating activities. I will earn a profit of KES 200 which is enough to carer for my basic needs such as food for a family of 5 members. It will also help me to pay school fees for my children as well as using the stock as a security to get a loan for further investment. The remaining amount will help me to support my child who is completing his primary school education this year, and eventually join secondary school as I give time for my business to grow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I will not be speaking the truth if I say that Iam not happy. This is because the fact that I wake up everything morning seeing my family in joy and happiness fills my heart with pleasure and thanksgiving to God. This is because it reminds me of Gods love to my household.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am currently facing is lack of money due to a medical condition that has affected me for over ten years. The condition affected my right hand side of the body and rendered it none functional. This led to loss of my job a driver. I started moving from hospital to another for medical attention but not successful. Consequently I spent all the resources that that I had saved for many years. This has hindered me to have enough capital to start a shop that will earn me a living as well as catering for my children education.
