How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Right now, I am planning to plaster my house because now I have the plastering materials. I also desired to buy a sewing machine to generate more income for school fees payment and farming.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, I was happy with how Give Directly officers treated us and also advised us well on how to use the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a sour milk vendor for the past fifteen years, I normally use my income for school fees payments. As a sweet potato farmer too, I normally generate income majorly for food. Recently, when I received my second transfer I felt a sense of relief. This is because I had school fees arrears and my kids would be sent home from time to time. Furthermore, my husband is polygamous and he seldom supports me. I, therefore, spent KES 20,000 of my second transfers on the payment of school fees for my four kids. Now, I am grateful because all this year's fees are cleared. Secondly, I had a timber-framed house with a muddy floor. Therefore I decided to spend KES 20,000 on the purchase of floor plastering materials to improve my house when I received the transfer. Thirdly, I also spent KES 10,000 on food and household items. This is because earlier I relied on the farming of sweet potatoes for food. This will sustain my family for a longer time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning at around 9 am and I was outside washing the utensils. I heard my phone that I had placed aside on the ground ringing. I decided to check it and I was immediately filled with joy when I saw the SMS saying that I had received the lump sum transfer that GiveDirectly had promised us. My husband was resting in a shade nearby and I called unto him telling him of the good news. He couldn't believe what I was saying and he hurriedly came to check the SMS for himself. He was so happy about this and we celebrated as we talked of how the transfer is going to change our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer has brought into my life is that with the water tank, I can now collect rain water and I have been able to rest a little bit. I no longer have to make long trips to the river to fetch water. We were also able to pay school fees for our children and hence we no longer have worries that they are going to be sent home due to school fees arrears. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for this, may God bless you.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used the better part of the transfer in buying a water tank and the gutters. We decided to settle on buying the tank because the river that we usually go to to fetch water is very far. I am no longer that strong and I am not always of good health. I am therefore no longer able to trek such long distances carrying water on my back. We were not able to buy a water tank before because most of the money that we get usually goes to the payment of school fees for our four children and buying food. The maize farming usually do not do well in our area and hence there is always a lot of hunger. This dream has only been possible due to GiveDirectly and we are so much grateful for that.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means better education for my children. I have always depended on the profits ( KES 4000) I earn from the milk business to pay school fees for my 4 children in grade 5,6,8 and grade 9. This is insufficient as the children have to miss school at times for 3 days as I look for their fees. I intend to use KES 35000 towards this course. Additionally, I will spend KES 25000 to purchase a dairy cow for milk production to boost my business. I currently have 1 cow that produces 4 litres of milk daily and as time goes on , it might cut its production.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning because I am rejuvenated and ready to face a new day. I always wake up at 5am prepare breakfast for my children then go to the farm at 6am to cultivate my sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes is a delicacy for my family as maize farming has been an hurdle in my area because of the harsh climate.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I recently developed Menengitis disease that has drained my energy and finances. I have spent close to KES 100000 towards the treatment and this has depleted the family's finances. I do not have enough energy to look for more finances to support my family as I am left to depend on my husband who is an assistant chief ,for support. Therefore this has been my biggest hardship.
