How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the time of my enrollment in the program, I had no single cow, and getting milk for my household consumption was expensive since I had to spend money on daily basis. Therefore, being driven with a desire to save some money in the future, I developed an initial goal of buying a cow. Am glad that with the first transfer, I was able to achieve this goal, a situation that has enabled me to plan to buy new household items. For years, I did not have seats in my house since I could not raise money for this. I have therefore come up with a plan of buying a new set of seats that will serve my household well, especially in the event we have visitors. I am glad that my life is steadily changing for the better.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Unlike other interventions where a recipient is not given an opportunity to make his/her own choice based on their individual needs whenever assistance is accorded to them, GiveDirectly considers giving an opportunity for recipients to make their own decisions. It does so well in this through adopting an approach called unconditional cash transfer. In doing so, it does not attach any condition to its transfers thus we spend the money in meeting our immediate needs, and this has a huge impact on our daily lives. There is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the most recent transfer, I was able not only to change the interior design of my house by acquiring a new set of chairs but also bought a new bundle of clothes for my two children, my wife and myself. For the set of chairs, I spent 10,000 KES while 13,000 KES was spent on purchasing clothes. Whenever I am back in the house, I feel so excited to see my children looking more descent than they were before I began receiving my transfers. I also feel happy to have some level of comfort that I could not enjoy before GiveDirectly sent me the transfers.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8p.m when I received a message on my phone with confirmation of receiving some amount from Give directly. To me, this was great news because we had plans of accomplishing some things since we enrolled in the program. I thanked God and went ahead to inform the other family members that we had received the amount we had been waiting for since we were enrolled. This was going to at least help us to settle our financial constraints.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the presence of a cow on our anytime.I am happy that I have assurance that things have changed for better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had been depending on my mother in terms of supply of milk which was a bit of a challenge to us because she used to supply us a liter which was not enough for my family. I had to purchase a dairy cow with a calf which cost me Kshs. 42,000 that has at least helped us to get enough milk for quite a long time.with the remaining amount, I had to purchase some house hold stuff -utensils, furnitures at Ksh. 6,000. With the remaining amount, I used to buy food and clothing for my nuclear family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
At the moment we do not own a cow, we are provided milk by our parents since we got married five years ago. We have always wished we could own a dairy cow that we could earn income through the selling of milk. I plan to purchase a cow worth approximately KES 40,000. For the rest of the amount, I will fence off my farm and subdivide it into paddocks to help in looking after this cow. Receiving this money, therefore, means I will increase my sources of income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been saving up to buy some goats with a greater goal of buying a dairy cow. Two months ago I bought two goats at KES 5000 which made me happy. I realized that I had the potential that with the same zeal I could achieve more. I'm now happier that with Give Directly's support I will achieve more than I could dream of.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is a lack of finances due to insufficient resources and limited sources of income. I own an eight of an acre with most of it being unproductive. My wife is jobless while I'm a trained veterinary doctor but I'm yet to secure a job. On a good day doing casual jobs, I make KES 3000 a week. This goes to providing food for my family of four. It is a challenge to save up money for other developments as I strain a lot when I need to save.
