How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is totally different. First, I have never had such an amount of cash all my life. This is the first difference. Second, I am a happy person lately. I used to worry and be stressed due to lack of food and poverty. Now I am well fed. Finally, my economic status has improved. I now own a cow and a new house, not to mention the business that I am about to start; it will continuously improve my financial status and life in general. I am happy and grateful, thank you GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my view, GiveDirectly does well to lift people from poverty. I never knew I will build a house due to lack of funds and a tough life. Now I have a new house courtesy of GiveDirectly. The one I had was old and worn out. I do not see something that GD is not doing well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I am yet to spend the second transfer that GiveDirectly sent me. I plan to start a business of buying and selling livestock. I will buy the emaciated ones, de-worm them, feed them well and get them fattened then sell them at a good price. This will take me at least a month. Buying emaciated cows that are suffering are quite cheap because owners sell them at a throw away price. I know I will get good returns from the business.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life is that I am now building a new house. The one I have been living in had been debilitated - run down walls , leaking roof - and it was unbearable during raining seasons. I even had to keep shifting in the house to a better spot to avoid being rained on. There were times that water would even come out as fissures from the cracked floor because we live in a terrain that is susceptible to water flowing from the ground. During those times we would just try to drain the water out. My life is so much better because of Give Directly. I am now happy and stress-free. I can even see a cow in my compound and I feel happy. I feel like a human being too and I am grateful.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was on my way home from the shopping center when I noticed the funds from Give Directly had arrived. I was so happy because I had not received such funds before. Thank you for the transfer.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
The first transfer from Give Directly enabled me to buy a cow, goats, build a house and plant crops - maize and beans for sale of consumption. I also bought clothes and food. I thought of changing my life to be better. I had been living in a run-down thatched house so I needed a house and I am almost done building it - I bought iron sheets for roofing and paid labor. I also did not have a cow and I used to borrow milk from my neighbors or buy when I could. Now I have my own cow that will soon give me milk. I have been having one attire also, I really needed clothes and I have changed my look. I was in need of food too and the funds helped me to buy some.

The happiest part of my day is in the morning. This is because God has enabled me to see another day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My problems began in 2007 when I was diagonised with diabetes.I visited several hospitals to seek medication.I had even lost hope of living again.I sold everything I had including livestock which I depended on.For now I am very weak whereas I depend on casual labour to get food.It has been a problem feeding my family and now my wife has left with my children one month ago because I cannot meet their basic needs.I feel lonely, sad and heart broken and I dont know what lies ahead of me.This is the biggest hardship of my life.
