How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Because of the many challenges I was facing in order to take care of my family, I incurred lots of debts. My health condition was a major contributing factor to this. I could not work on most days and this forced me to incur the debts. My new goal is to clear all the debts I have so that I can have peace of mind.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly does well by helping us with the unconditional transfers. With the funds, I have been able to accomplish some goals I had and also do away with most of the challenges I have been facing. I would suggest to the organization to be timely when disbursing the funds. Some of my neighbors were affected by receiving the late transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For the past ten years, I have been battling with a series of illness and some allergic reaction on my body. During the early mornings and late evenings, I develop wounds on my face, mouth, hands and legs. This has affected my daily routine of living. I am the only breadwinner in my family (husband and three children) because my husband is of age and unable to work. I have been working on casual jobs (making charcoal for sale) to take care of my family. Upon receiving my transfer, I spent a huge portion in seeking medical attention for my condition because previously I could not because of lack of finances. I addition to paying medical bills, I used part of the transfers to build a new house for the family. The house we lived in previously was in a terrible state. The wind blew part of the roof away and thus was leaking when it rained. Part of the mud walls came off and this affected us in terms of our privacy with our family members while in the house. The new house I am building is spacious and will accommodate all our family members and restore our privacy and guarantee our safety while sleeping.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 AM when I was just relaxing from taking breakfast when my mobile phone started ringing so loudly. At that particular time, I was so nervous and asked one of my daughters to check whose and where the message was from. On checking, she realized that I had received the KES 55000 from Segovia Technology. I was so happy and at first I could believe my eyes. This seems to be a miracle to us as a family since it was our first time getting such a huge amount of money. We later on sat down as a family ad started to plan on how best we would utilize the money accordingly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers, I was able to construct a new house. Previously I used to sleep in an unconducive environment and as a result, I was not able to shelter with all my children under one roof. My current house was almost collapsing and I am so grateful the organization came in good time. I have been yearning to at least renovate my house for all those years leave alone construct a new one but still, I couldnt afford it. Therefore this forced my kids to be sleeping at my relatives and sometimes friends' houses. This has frustrated me a lot but then it was beyond my control. My spouse has been sick for so long and very old therefore I had to step in as the family's breadwinner. With the unstable jobs, all I could afford was to provide a daily meal for my family. Therefore after receiving my first cash transfer, building a house was a priority since it has been a major challenge all along. I am so thankful that this was a success and for now, we are happily sleeping under one roof with all my family members without having to worry about the embarrassments we have been through plus the harsh climate. As a mother, I am so proud.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials which include iron sheets at KES 3800, building poles at KES 6800, nails, timber, and gave the mason KES 8000 his labor charge. I had to prioritize the issue of housing becasue the previous one was in a poor state and almost collapsing. Also, it was very small in size and It could not accommodate all my eight family members and at times my children had to seek shelter from my neighbors. I also cleared school fees for my son who was in his final year in college and we were stuck since I had no idea where I would acquire the fees needed. With the remaining amount tog money, I bought foodstuffs that would sustain us for at least two weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will really help me because I am in a financial crisis. I have a skin disease that requires specialised medication. I need approximately KES 10,000 for tests that are required before undergoing medication. My house is small, grass thatched and the walls are almost falling off. I will use KES 30,000 to build a better house with two rooms and an iron sheet roof.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son secured a casual job in town this year. He has really been supportive. For the last few months he has been sending me some money that will help me build a house. The condition of my house is very bad. I have been buying building materials and storing them. This will save me a lot of money at the end of this year when I start building the house.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am currently facing is health related. I have a skin condition that has really been a problem for over 20 years. I have sought medication in the past but lack of enough money has made the condition recur because I do not complete the dose required. A two weeks dose requires KES 5,850. The doctor has warned me against doing physical jobs and working in the sun since the condition gets worse. This has limited my income since most jobs here at home are of physical nature.
