How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is that in the year to come, I should be able to accomplish my dream of buying a parcel of land. Though this is a challenge at the moment because of my financial status, I am hoping to manage the dairy project and the goat-rearing project well. With it, I can assure myself that I would accomplish this goal in no time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the staff from GiveDirectly were respectful and they talked to us politely. They took us through the organization program well and gave us time to ask questions and also gave us time for us to decide for ourselves how best we would spend our transfer. I did not witness things that needed to be corrected so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am an independent woman with no children; I depend on my business of selling second-hand clothes to make ends meet. When I received my second transfer, I opted to buy a healthy dairy cow worth $340. This is because I wanted something that would be sustainable and also able to earn an income from it. It was not possible to get a huge sum of money to initiate this goal because of the nature of my business, which is small. Secondly, I bought two goats for $150. I knew that with the two projects, I can comfortably boost my income. I am forever grateful for the support that forever boosted my living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As soon as I confirmed the receipt of my transfer, I was overjoyed and thanked God for such prompt assistance. That was the first large sum of money I had ever received as a form of assistance in my life. It meant a lot to me, and I was left wondering if it was true that the transfer was mine. To be more specific, the most money I had ever received was KES 15,000. However, with the current transfer, I will be able to complete a number of goals that were put on hold due to financial constraints.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before being enrolled in the program, as a family, we struggled more to obtain just two meals a day. The rise in the cost of milk and maize flour among other essential commodities subjected us to more suffering. Nonetheless, even though I was able to buy a cow and goats, the outstanding difference in my life is the relief from hunger. The scenario was bad, being forced to spend KES 500 for a single-family need as opposed to the previous KES 200. Thanks to GiveDirectly for coming to my family's aid with the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being driven by my value for livestock, I considered spending KES 28,000 on buying a lactating cow. Another sum of KES 13,000. helped me in acquiring two goats. Generally, livestock is important to live assets with more returns. For instance, with a lactating cow, I am assured that my family will always get adequate milk for consumption. And in the event we need urgent money, we will find it easy to sell some. Since we have a community school under construction, I decided to donate KES 2,000 towards the same and I shall live to remember the impact the school creates on our little children. However, the rest of the transfer went on food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I'm a single mother and I don't get enough income to sustain my self and my child. Although I work for someone else, I was struggling to raise some capital to start my own business. This is a God sent opportunity through Give Directly. Once I receive the money, it will move me to another step of owning my own business. I'm so happy.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My child joined baby class in the beginning of this month. That brought a lot of joy to me as I see him grow well
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I live in my parents land, and I have been receiving pressure from home to look for my own land to relocate as soon as possible. So the plans and pressure of buying my own piece of land is stressing me.
