How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I aspire to see my children through school comfortably without them being sent home more often. To accomplish this dream, I plan on investing more in dairy farming and starting a business, To realise this goal, I would be saving at least 10 per cent on my salary, It might take a long time but I am hopeful that this will be achieved.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The most valuable gift in our life was the money from GiveDirectly. We were happy and satisfied because we were fully aware that the money was completely non-refundable. We are thankful that it managed to elevate our community out of abject poverty. I have not witnessed any instances of organizational inefficiency.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my second transfer, I opted to purchase a dairy cow worth $400. With it, I knew that I would be able to attract extra income from it and that my children would have enough milk. I had a cow before, but I wanted to add more for it to attract more income and for sustainability. Secondly, I bought two goats for $10. I work in the transport industry as a driver, married and together we have three children, My wife is a consistent farmer and the one taking care of our animals at home. I am so happy for the support that uplifted my living standards amazingly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I work as a driver and I can remember on that day I was on the road driving home from Nairobi where I had taken a patient for medication. I got a notification on my phone and when we reached our stop over, I checked on my phone and noticed that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and couldn't wait to share the good news with my family. I drove to my destination and went straight home to share the news with my family. We were all filled with happiness as we all knew that the money would change our livelihood.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
When I got enrolled to the program and promised that I would receive KES 110000, I saw that my time had come to change the face of my home and end the financial struggles that I was going through. I had sold all the cows which I had when my mother was hailing and that left me with the burden of buying milk every day. I would spent upto KES 120 in a day on buying milk and when I got the transfer and bought a lactating cow, I took a breath from daily cost of buying milk. Having a cow has brought a big difference in my daily life as I no longer buy milk.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
At the time when GiveDirectly came to our home we had moved to the village almost a year ago. I had managed to built only one house which we would use it as out kitchen as well as bedroom. I would manage my daily earnings from driving job through buying foodstuffs, paying school fees and also buying building materials. Lucky enough I had bought a few building materials and when I got my transfer, I spent KES 10000 on buying ironsheets and KES 5000 on buying construction poles in readiness for constructing a bigger and a better house which would provide us enough space. I then spent another KES 5000 on buying foodstuffs for my family since we had little food at that time.
The rest KES 35000, I spent on buying a lactating dairy cow for milk production. I was spending alot on buying milk since we had none as I had sold the cows I had so as to raise money for my mother who was sick.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money, I will plan KES 50,000 to build my family a spacious house. We are currently living in a single house with all my children which makes me feel embarrassed. With my little income of KES 500 daily, I can only put food on the table for my family making it difficult to build a better house for them. In our region, milk is in high demand and thus supports most families. This makes me think about buying my family a cow with KES 30,000 to enable them to tap more stable income with the production and sale of milk. This will bring joy to my household and reduce the burden of the high cost of living.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We have been enjoying the gift of good health for the last six months. This made me happy and have peace of mind to work hard and provide for my family of six.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am currently battling the high cost of living in my household. I buy most of the food for my family which is stressing now that my daily income of KES 500 is not sustainable.
